Michael contacted me intending to earn his private pilot certificate. He started training, and at some point mentioned he wanted to learn to backcountry ski. He had never been ski touring before, but when I told him about the Ice Axe Expeditions Arctic Circle Ski and Sail, he decided there was no time like the present. We spent a few days working on his touring skills in Tahoe, then flew to Svalbard to start our trip. After a few days that included his first ski tour rope...d up and his first boot pack, Michael accomplished his goal of ski touring 4000 vertical feet in a day. He earned his Private Pilot certificate shortly after returning to the States. Pretty inspiring to see how someone like this makes his dreams reality. One thing I love about aviation: you fly 2 hours from home and make a low approach looking for a windsock, then have a heart attack as you’re about to touch down because there appear to be fist sized rocks all over the runway. Between smoke layers in the #tbm . Logged more instrument time the past few weeks than I have in years because of the #californiafires . Smoke is tricky to fly in because it’s unpredictable, and slant range versus vertical visibility values can be so different. While visibility was reported at 7 statute miles on our return flight from this trip, we were unable to see the ground from 2000 AGL and shot an instrument approach nearly to minimums before getting the runway lights in sight.

Traveling to a city is, for me, like traveling to a different country. I fell in love with #austin this week, and it reminded me why I travel. To step outside routine is to step outside yourself. It lets us see again the things that habit makes us blind to. And so it makes space for change and deeper love. #adventuretravel
