TDPUD is working hard to respond to the threat of catastrophic wildfires and to reduce the risk that TDPUD’s overhead electric equipment is the cause of a wildfire. As a recent reminder of the risk, a tree fell into utility power lines in Meeks Bay causing a small wildfire a few days ago. This tree that fell is called a "hazard tree" in the utility business. Hazard trees have the potential to fail and threaten the reliability ...of the District’s overhead electric facilities, and are typically located outside of the utility right-of-way. The District works hard to identify hazard trees in our service territory, and we communicate with property owners for the timely removal of these trees. Are you prepared for wildfires? The Truckee Donner Public Utility District is required by State law to remove vegetation close to power lines for public safety and reliability. This consists of tree trimming and tree removal. We are also required to remove any dead, diseased, or dying trees that have the potential to fall on utility lines within our Right-of-Ways or easements. Truckee Donner PUD's comprehensive Wildfire Mitigation Plan includes enhanced vegetation management activities, or tree trimming. The work is completed by a licensed and certified contractor hired by the District annually. This work includes clearing vegetation within a larger area around electrical lines and poles than in the past, as well as inspecting and trimming more frequently. This reduces the risk of fire by minimizing accidental contact from branches and other vegetation.
