Yesterday 12 members of the club ventured to Pioneertown Mountain Preserve where we hiked the Pipe's Canyon, Indian Loop and Chaparrosa Peak trails. The whole hike varied from 7 to 8 miles and had around 1000 feet of elevation gain. This is an interesting hike with many different features - a stream running through riparian woods in Pipe's Canyon, high desert geology and rocks and great views throughout but especially from the top of Chaparrosa Peak.
Yesterday, 29 members and guests of the hiking club hiked in the Mission Creek Preserve. We started at the stone house, hiked west two miles to the Pacific Crest Trail and then hiked south another mile or so until we arrived at the crest separating the Mission Creek Preserve and the Whitewater Preserve. After a snack break, we hiked back to the stone house.
Today 23 members of the club hiked to the Bat Caves Buttes which are located 1.5 miles east of the Salton Sea about 19 miles south of Mecca. These caves were created when the Salton Sea was flooded in the early stages before the water elevation dropped. The waves were responsible for the tunneling of the caves. We did not see any bats in the caves but did seen lots of bat guano (droppings) and in one cave we could hear some high pitched peeps and squeaks from the crevices where the bats reside during the day.
Yesterday 13 members of the club hiked the Murray Hill Trail near Palm Springs. It's a very challenging hike at 9 miles long and nearly 2500 feet of climbing but the views are well worth it.
Today was another beautiful day for hiking when 28 members tackled the iconic Painted Canyon and Ladders in the Mecca Hills. The views were varied and amazing
Today we hiked 7 miles and climbed 1,100 feet on the Art Smith Trail. Great views of Palm Desert and perfect weather for hiking.
Today 24 members of the club hiked the 3 mile trail to Pushawalla Oasis and back. Once there, we enjoyed a mimosa snack to kickoff the new year. Happy New Year and best wishes to all for 2020.
Today 32 members of the club tackled the East Indio Hills Badlands trail. It's a relatively new hike and it's a great one. We advertised it as Easy but it's actually Moderate with a distance of 5.5 miles and an elevation gain of around 800 feet. The trail head is located near the north Terra Lago golf course and we headed north to the Indio Hills from there. We made our way through a series of slot canyons and climbed to the top of the Indio Hills where we had great views of the Little San Bernardino Mountains to the north and the Coachella Valley to the south. The first picture is a screen capture of the trail route on Alltrails.
Today 10 members of the club hiked the 6 mile long Eisenhower Peak trail and climbed 800 feet doing it. We were rewarded with great views of Palm Desert and Indian Wells. The weather was a bit cloudy but otherwise perfect for hiking.
Today 37 members and guests of the Trilogy La Quinta Hiking Club hiked the Coffee Bean Canyon trail in the Mecca Hills. The hike was led by author Philip Ferranti who wrote "140 Great Hikes in and around Palm Springs". The weather was great and the views fantastic! Thanks Philip for a great hike!
