Welcome to our new series "What the Arborist Sees," where we take a closer look at some of the nuances of arboriculture to help you learn more about your trees! For our first post, we're looking at a California classic: the coast redwood. To the untrained eye, this tree looks healthy and tall. But an arborist would notice how the branches have been selectively removed and thinned, making the remaining branches more prone to failure. The lower canopy should look more dense, li...ke the top. A healthy redwood has a full dense canopy and you shouldn't be able to see such large patches of sky through its foliage. Redwoods don't need a lot of pruning, unless you're removing deadwood, reducing elongated branches, or pruning out multiple tops. It's best to leave them alone and focus your efforts into giving them enough water and mulch to help them be as healthy as possible.
