Merle Cavaliers: There is no Merle gene in the Cavalier. They are not a recognized color. Puppies that resemble Cavaliers and have a Merle coat pattern are ...mix breeds. A Cavalier has to be outcrossed to a breed that carries a Merle gene such as a Dachshund, Pomeranian, Cocker Spaniel, Australian Shepherd, Shetland Sheep Dog, Corgi, Chihuahua, and several other larger breeds. The dog’s coat pattern known as 'merle' is sometimes referred to as a colour, but is in fact due to a gene that alters the way pigment appears in the dog's coat. The merle coat pattern is popular because it is unusual and very unique, with each merle dog having a different coat pattern. Many breeders in the breeds that have Merle as a coat pattern will not breed them. Why? Besides the color pattern, the merle gene is known to cause a number of health problems, mostly deafness and blindness, and also sun sensitivity and skin cancer. Unfortunately, these health problems associated with the merle mutation and the risk of these problems occurring increases when two merle coated dogs are bred together. In certain clubs and countries such as the UK, it is banned to breed two Merles together. A double Merle, when both parents are Merle is called the white ghost and is a lethal gene combination. Some of the severely affected puppies, if they live are often surrendered to rescue or place in homes with lots of care. Double merles are highly likely to suffer from eye or ear deformities (in some cases both), which at the most extreme can result in complete blindness right to the point of having very deformed eyeballs and deafness. Many sites are popping up with Rare Color Cavaliers that includes Merle color patterns. Some of these puppies are selling for more than a well bred, health tested Cavalier puppy. In order for them to look more like a ‘cavalier’ these breeders are out crossing a Cavaliers to a Merle dog of a different breed. Then taking those offspring and breeding them together. As you just read, this is breeding two Merle’s together and creating a lethal gene combination. So if they are willing to do this, I assure you none of the parents, or grandparents have cardiac, eye, DNA or any other health testing being done. If an owner wishes to get an unique puppy... work with a reputable breeder that is health testing and I assure you there will be at times a wonderful uniquely marked healthy puppy such as a Ruby with a white blaze or socks, a Blenheim or Tri with a white face or all dark. Some of these are so lovely and yet healthy. So the next time you see a Merle patterned puppy that resembles a Cavalier, you now know the unintended consequences of the genetic firestorm that is associated within. It only gets worse the more that Merle puppy looks like a Cavalier because it means it was most likely a double merle breeding. The following photos are for reference and not my dogs. She showed one Cavalier parent being merle pattern and the other not, however you can see the eye is a blue pattern of the merle so these puppies carry a double merle gene.

Just here to point out that for all our collective hang ups around using food with our dogs, we, ourselves, have used food for centuries as reinforcement, as co...mfort, as bonding, as tradition, and as connection with each other. We pass down family recipes, we keep returning to our favorite restaurants, we cherish holiday dinners with loved ones, we watch cooking shows and read food blogs, we gather and socialize over food, we cook meals and bake as self-care, we bring dishes to sick neighbors, we cook to carry on our culture, the list goes on. I personally will spend hours baking because I find sharing what I made with others deeply reinforcing. Somehow I never wonder whether my family loves me just because I bake for them. Food doesn’t define our relationships, but it’s often a joyful part of them. And I have zero reservations that my dog comes to me, chooses to be near me, or responds to my cues just because of food. I have the relationship I have with him and have built the behaviors I’ve built because I know what drives behavior and I’m generous with reinforcement. I’m also the source of wonderful things for him, including food. So, let’s get over our hang ups and start being more generous with our dogs.
