Torrance Fencing Club 30.11.2020

From our coaches: Alexander Massialas against Garozzo of Italy. Especially watch Garozzo's footwork. As I have said many times, do not chase your opponents. control the approach for attack. Garozzo's footwork is extra good, and Alexander's control of distance is very critical to his victory. I urge you to use YouTube's speed settings to analyze what actually happens on some of these scores. I slowed some of the actions down to .25 of normal, revealing what actually happened. These guys have incredibly fast hands and it is not always clear at full speed what they did. The thing that enables the use of fast hands (aside from great technique) is near absolute control of distance. Footwork, footwork, footwork.

From our coaches: After the first five or so touches, Nick Itkin (smaller man on the right) completely dominates this bout. He uses these early touches to gain the knowledge he needs to soundly win the match. Itkin demonstrates two things, dynamic, disciplined footwork, and very excellent and well timed technique. ... Watch this bout twice, first to watch the footwork, and then again to try to understand the interplay of technique and tactics. Unfortunately, due to camera angles we cannot see disengages (if any) on the final of Itkin's attacks. Notice, that though Nick is the smaller man, he uses very deep lunges to make up the difference in size. As I have been emphasizing in footwork drill, OPEN YOUR LEGS to get maximum distance, and use the back leg to drive you forward with speed. His opponent, though tall, does not make good use of his size. Though he made it to the gold medal bout, his foot work is second rate compared to Nick Itkin's.

From our coaches: Watch this video, especially Olivartes (on the left, red light). Note his with well placed blade on deep attack. Also watch the footwork. They do not "chase" they continually adjust. When Olivares retreats, his proponent takes the ground, but does not chase after him. Both fencers are constantly moving, never standing still. Their movements have purpose. Can you determine what the purposes are? Watch several times. Once to study the footwork, and again to study technique/strategy. Question to the beginners .... why does Olivares often retreat (apparently for no reason) then score with an attack? (Think about tactics/strategy)

From our coaches: Junior world championship women's epèe semi & finals at about 17:00 for semis, final at 52:00 Note the rather defensive nature of these bouts. Many fewer shots than I have seen locally. https://youtu.be/q7-OMR1S1l4
