Transformation Thursday Meet this 18 pounds of intensity named Boomer. Don’t let his size fool you, he showed Eddie (our stuffed dog) who’s boss. Boomer’s own...er was dreading her walks and borderline embarrassed with his behavior of lunging and posturing towards other dogs in the community. Fast forward a few sessions and constant work from his handler and he is a different dog, at least that’s what the others in the neighborhood think! Just working on some position changes with my girl. Does she have competition level obedience? No. Is that my goal, not really. Obviously I’d like her obedience to be clean and efficient but what’s most important to me is that I have a well behaved girl in any environment. After all, the biggest compliment I get on her is actually a question. What breeder did you get her from? When the reality of it is (some of our new followers may not know) at 4 1/2 months old I was already... her 3rd home. She had numerous behavioral issues and she wouldn’t have been a pup I would have chosen from a litter. Many of my trainer friends felt (as I did) that if we got her comfortable around other dogs and tolerant around them, it would be a win. 3 years later she is basically my right hand. She has taught me, amongst many other things, to never put a limit on what a pup could do, let the pup show you what their limits are. Now she goes every where with me, has helped me rehab numerous dogs and helped me raise numerous pups to confident adults. She now has the duty of helping me raise Bubba, our little terror. She’s patient, gentle, yet she puts him in his place when needed. This beautiful girl has imprinted those paws deep in this cold, black heart of mine! In this picture you see @kayy_bashh getting engagement from Max in our Sunday Beginners Class. What you don’t see is there are dogs in front, behind, and all around. Creating engagement (dog staying connected to you, looking at you when needed) in my humble opinion, is one of the most often overlooked foundations of training. Think about it for a moment, we can teach our dogs to heel, sit, down, stay, rollover and many other commands. That though, all goes out the window if ...we can’t get their attention in distraction filled environments. This is the one behavior we use to help pups eventually become neutral to environments and triggers. Work with your pups and create more engagement, when done right, you will see a noticeable difference in their responsiveness to you. If your pup is motivated to work for you, your relationship becomes stronger and your outings are more enjoyable for you and your pup! We hope everyone has a great weekend. My guy...Finn - Mr. steal yo girl! If you follow our stories you’ve seen how well adjusted this little guy is in most scenarios. Don’t be fooled into thinking he came that way. @missywyche has worked extremely hard with this knuckle head. He’s a pushy stubborn boy to say the least. This is what happens when you take the time to teach your pup what you want; it creates more of those good behaviors. Finn is a great example of structure and direction leading to more freedom. Meet Val, she is a fearful aggressive Belgian Malinois who has no shortage of triggers. Whether it’s dogs, cars, byciclists, or motorcycles her intensity would show in a negative way. Lunging, barking, and at times redirecting on her handler. The significant improvement with Val is a result of 2 private sessions, countless group classes attended, and a TON of hard work from her owner. With dogs such as Val, there is no casual outing; every interaction is a training session for both her and her handler. There is much more work ahead, but Val and her family can begin to enjoy their time together and strengthen their bond due to structure, direction, and lots of hard work. Great job Team Val!
