Laser Spine Institute shuts down overnight! I saw the news that Laser Spine Institute (LSI) closed its doors last Friday, March 1. Apparently, it came as a complete surprise to patients and employees as well. I can’t imagine the shock and disappointment that the closure caused. It must be difficult enough for all of the Laser Spine employees and their families that depended on them, but even more disheartening for the patients anticipating a procedure to relieve their pain. ... The most unique thing about Laser Spine was the unprecedented use of television and Internet ads to promote and market their Laser brand of minimally invasive spine surgery. Their tremendous growth proved that advertising works. Although such advertising techniques were not really appreciated by most medical professionals, it did do one important thing. It introduced the general public to an alternative to major spine surgery... It really brought attention to minimally invasive spine surgery performed through a tube requiring a 1-inch incision. I have been performing minimally invasive spine surgery for many years now (even before Laser Spine) and have watched minimally invasive spine surgery evolve over the past two decades to the point where surgery is now performed endoscopically through a 3 / 8 inch incision in a water environment, like arthroscopic knee surgery. The laser is a great tool, but other tools play a more important role these days. I was shocked to hear about the closing of Laser Spine and feel very badly for all the patients expecting to get pain relief from one of their surgical procedures.
