Calathea Warscewiczii Pronunciation: var-she-VICH-ee-eye Humidity: Likes to be humid Soil: Well draining... Watering: Regularly Light: Indirect or dappled light Other names: Velvet Calathea, Calathea Velvet, Maranta Warscewiczii, Velvet Touch This plant belongs to the Calathea family which often get classed as prayer plants. This is due to the movement the leaves of the plants do throughout the day which resembles a figure praying. . It’s important that you keep your Calathea in a pot with drainage holes so the excess water can leave the soil because although it likes to be kept moist this doesn’t mean sitting in water. During the winter months as your plant is receiving less sunlight you may find that you need to water it less, These plants usually grow under the canopy and protection of other plants so you want to find a bright spot but that’s protected from the direct rays of the sun. Dappled or shaded light is best. If you expose it to direct light you may find that the leaves become scorched and damaged and this is something you don’t want as once the leaves are damaged you can’t reverse it. The soil for the Spathiphyllum 'Peace Lily' Variegated should be kept moist but not soggy. Let the soil dry between waterings, but do not allow to wilt; this causes the leaves to yellow. When watering, use water that is at room temperature and has been allowed to sit so that the chlorine can evaporate. These plants do well in lower light situations, but prefer bright filtered light. Do not place in direct sun. When grown indoors, Spathiphyllum have very low fertility needs. A...pply fertilizer at one quarter of the recommended strength. Over fertilizing can produce burning of tips and roots. Peace lilies enjoy warm conditions between 68 and 85F during the day and a 10 degree drop at night. Cold, and drafty conditions in the 40’s and 50’s will slow growth considerably. Extended periods below 40 can damage leaves, stems and roots. The plant requires a large pot and should be kept somewhat potbound. Repot, if necessary the next growing year. Photography @hopebowser Model @zellatrix

Gardening connects us with nature In our increasingly urbanised and technologically driven world, reconnecting with nature can have a huge impact on mental health. Studies have found that spending time in green spaces helps people to destress and relax. It also helps people to feel more at one with the world, and overcome feelings of self-absorption that can worsen mental health issues.

We want to do some something special to highlight the unique place that we live in and the people that call it home. Every week we will introduce you to a member of our community with a short bio. This week we are featuring Anton, a 10 year employee at Brio Breadworks In Arcata. Antons Bio: I grew up in the Southern California orange groves. My childhood was full of palms, citrus trees and the smell of wet grass in the hot afternoons. Plants are very nostalgic for me! My da...d grew award winning roses and both grandmothers had secret garden type back yards. I moved to Northern California to escape the heat and found myself in this green wasteland. I fell in love with the wetly bowing branches, over growth and moss that seen to cradle the community. I had never seen gardens that grew skywards. Awe struck by the beauty, I continue to observe plants closely. I’ve worked with Brio Breadworks for 10 years now! I’m so happy with stability! Like plants, bread has a growing process! I’m fascinated with progression, as to look behind yourself and see have far you’ve come and much you’ve grown. I think everyone will agree that when we notice new growth on a plant, yawning outward, the healthy excitement, we too, grow and expand

How to Propagate Pothos Plants Pothos are very easy to propagate, making them a lovely houseplant to share with family, friends, and neighbors. Alternatively, keep all the offspring to yourself and turn your home into a pothos junglewe won’t judge! Locate a healthy-looking vine to take a cutting from. Leaves should be bright and healthy, and should not be wilted. Make a stem cutting. The ideal stem cutting will be 4-6 inches in length and have 2-3 leaves on it. Cut the vine ...just above a root node (i.e., the spot on the vine where aerial roots grow out of). Once you have your cutting, place the cutting in a small glass of water. After a few weeks you should start to see roots. Photographer @hopebowser Model @champagnepirate See more
