Happy Diwali! Diwali is the Indian festival of lights, usually lasting five days and is one of the most popular festivals of Hinduism. Diwali symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. In the lead-up to Diwali, celebrants will prepare by cleaning, renovating, and decorating their homes and workplaces. During Diwali, people wear their finest clothes, illuminate the interior and exterior of their homes, worship ceremonies of Lakshmi (the goddess of prosperity and wealth), light fireworks, and partake in family feasts, where mithai (sweets) and gifts are shared!

Election stress! Nearly 70% of U.S. adults say the presidential election is a significant source of stress, according to the American Psychological Association. The APA offers the following tips to help people manage stress related to the election: Limit media consumption.... Read just enough to stay informed. Turn off the newsfeed or take a digital break. Take some time for yourself, go for a walk, or spend time with friends and family doing things that you enjoy. Avoid getting into discussions about the election if you think they have the potential to escalate to conflict. Be aware of the frequency with which you’re discussing the election with friends, family members or coworkers. Remember that stress and anxiety about what might happen is not productive. Remember to take care of yourself! And if you need anything, our team is always here to help! Massage, an adjustment, acupuncture, or just here to say hi to lift your spirits!

Did you know this story? Meet the owners! Comment below and share what you enjoy about Julie or Dr. K! Dr. K is a graduate of Palmer West Chiropractic College in San Jose, California, Dr. Ryan Kauffman has been in practice since 2003. After spending his first 7 years of practice in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he opened up his first private practice in 2011, right here in Milpitas. ... Thrive Milpitas was originally born inside the Fitness Center on Jacklin Road (formerly Milpitas Health & Fitness, where he met his wife, Julie). Due to its continued growth, Julie decided to quit her job as a technical recruiter so she could focus her full-time attention on the rapid development of Thrive. In 2015 Thrive Milpitas moved to its current location on Jacklin Road, just down the road from the original location. Dr. Kauffman and his family love the Milpitas community, and wanted to stay close to the original location. With the success of Thrive Milpitas, the unique services offered, and the unmatched customer care and service provided, Dr. Kauffman and his family were ready to offer the Bay Area even more. In January 2018, they opened up Thrive 20/20. While this location is in San Jose, it is still very close to Milpitas and allows many of the commuting families from Milpitas to the North First Street business area to receive the same great services. An irritated or restricted joint may produce an ongoing urge to "pop it" yourself. Although self-adjusting may produce temporary r...elief, you should avoid the temptation for several reasons. Self-application of a crude generalized force to an entire region of the spine rarely frees the restricted culprit, but rather further loosens an already mobile segment. Over time, repeating this could lead to new problems from creating excessive motion. Consequently, spinal manipulation should be performed only by chiropractors or other highly trained doctors who can recognize when an adjustment is appropriate and when it is not.

Thrive 20/20 San Jose 09.04.2020

On June 4th, Dr. Kauffman and The Thrive Family issued the following open letter via email to every patient in their database. We have had an overwhleming posi...tive response from so many patients, and wanted to share it with more people: I have been writing this letter for days. I keep erasing and changing and trying to find the right words. Even harder, I am trying to not say the wrong words. I don't fully understand racism. I didn't grow up around it, and my parents taught me that women and men of all race and religion are equal. Unfortunately, we are reminded that this is not actually the case in America. This has to change. Thrive as a company, or myself as an individual, has never spoken out publicly on important social issues like racism and injustice up until now. As a white male, it is easy for me to forget that racism still exists, until another tragedy is reported. And since it is such a volatile subject, I am afraid to say something wrong in the public. I talk to my patients, my staff and my family, and condemn racism. I teach my kids it is wrong. And then it ends there. It is safer and easier to just stay silent to the public's ear. However, I now understand that silence is compliance. I understand that I don't know all all the forms of anti-black racism, but I am committed to learning about it. Instead of just "not being racist," and forgetting it still exist, we all need to understand the problem in order to fix it. The crisis of systemic racism in America is something that demands action and attention from all of us. We need to use our voice to help drive change and support the path to healing. Thrive stands with the Black Community. Their opportunity in life as a result of prejudice and discrimination cannot be predetermined. We can't just assume racism isn't an issue in our community. We need to get together with our community leaders and find out what actions we are going to take to make sure racism and hate crimes never occur in our streets. If we can make a change in our community, and others in their communities, America can finally make real changes. My family and my staff have heavy hearts with our nation’s tragic history of violence and racism that continues to target the Black community. I remember the Rodney King incidents like they were yesterday. As a teenager, I probably assumed there were still just "a few bad apples" out there, and hoped racism would disappear with time. Fast forward almost 30 years later, and things are no better, and maybe even worse. The pain that prejudice and discrimination has caused cannot be ignored. The Thrive community grieves for those who have lost their lives and their loved ones both from racism and careless acts during violent protests. Thrive is proud of the strong community we’ve built together over the last ten years in Milpitas and the one we started to grow in San Jose over the past couple years. We want to continue to lead with love, where everyone has the opportunity to Thrive. I believe in the power of community, the possibility that comes when we work together, and that love will always overcome hate. As a company, we have already began to implement things with our staff to help educate them (and myself). Thrive is providing our staff the opportunity to buy books and educate themselves and their family about social inequality, as well as giving them the means to donate to the charity or support group of their choice. But this is only the beginning. The Thrive Community plans to meet with public officials of both Milpitas and San Jose, and when the SIP allows, organize community outreach events to allow citizens to get to know each other, as well as their local authorities. There is no easy fix, and I certainly do not have all the answers. But we need to start somewhere. I would love to hear what my patients have planned, and what we can do to come together to help. Thank you for being part of the Thrive Community and Thrive Family! With a warm heart, Dr. Ryan Kauffman

How much water? In order for your body to heal properly & stay healthy, it needs to successfully eliminate toxins. A couple of ways that we remove these tox...ins from our body is through sweat and urine. Wondering how much you should be drinking? Generally 6-8 glasses each day, or take your body weight and divide it by two, and that is the recommended number of ounces of water you should consume in a day. Our clinic cares about your wellbeing! Share this post with your friends to help pass this information along. #DrinkWater #StayHydrated #StayHealthy

May 4th-8th is National Teacher Appreciation Week! With the recent Shelter in Place (SIP), I know from personal experience that a lot of parents are appreciatin...g their child's teachers even more. To celebrate and show our appreciation, both Thrive offices will be providing free treatment to all teachers between May 4th and 8th. Thrive Milpitas will be offering free treatment to teachers Monday, Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays. Thrive 20/20 will be offering free treatment on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In San Jose (Thrive 20/20), Dr. Nic will be seeing patients from 11am to 5pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will still continue to observe the shelter in place protocols, including wearing masks. The City of Milpitas has even issued a requirement for all patients and customers to wear masks into all businesses. We are also recommending this for San Jose. Additionally, the increased hours will allow us to space out the patients more, and practice better social distancing. While the state still has not approved Massage therapy in Santa Clara county during this SIP extension, we are hoping to offer massage and acupuncture soon. We will continue to monitor the Massage Licensing Authority recommendations, and will update our patients immediately with any changes. Thrive plans to honor all of those during these difficult times, and offer patients free treatment through Appreciation Weeks. It has been one month since I last updated our patients on our status. Thrive Milpitas and Thrive 20/20 has remained open for business during the Shelter in Pla...ce and Stay at Home orders. Thrive has been working closely with the California Chiropractic Association and the California Board of Chiropractic Examiners, and staying up-to-date with the latest pandemic facts and recommendations from our government and health care officials Thrive has remained strong and healthy for the past month, and we are confident that our excessive cleaning and sanitation of our clinics have kept our patients safe, and limit any unnecessary risks. Additionally, we are now in our second week of strict protocols put in place to further protect each of our patients. This includes (but is not limited to): (1) All doctors and back office staff in close contact with patients have and will continue to wear masks. (2) Continued private treatment rooms for every patient. (3) Eliminating patient check-in to avoid unnecessary use of shared computers. (4) Keeping patient at least 6 feet away from each other in the waiting area, and from the front desk. (5) Continued use of hospital-grade cleaning spray on the tables and chairs between every patient. (60 Cleaning and sanitizing our entire office every 30 minutes, including the most frequented areas (restrooms, doorknobs, equipment, water tank, etc. We remain open every day in Milpitas Monday through Friday (closed weekends), and we have not reduced any additional hours at our San Jose office and remain open all day Monday, Wednesday and Friday. While there is evidence in California that we have bent the curve of the virus spreading, we do recommended that you continue to listen to local health care officials to do your part. We recommend that any patient over the age of 65 and residents with chronic conditions (including obesity and high blood-pressure) to self-isolate at home. Additionally, any patient that has any symptoms such as coughing or sneezing and especially a fever to stay at home and consult your medical doctor via phone or email to set up an electronic appointment to make sure you take the appropriate next steps. I continue to feel it's important that the Thrive Family do what we can to help keep the hospitals and emergency rooms from being overwhelmed with neuromusculoskeletal patients. We continue to treat many nurses and doctors in need of care so they can continue to do their very important job. We will be here to continue to support our community and especially the health care providers that are on the front line. We want all of our patients to feel comfortable in receiving the care they need at both Thrive Milpitas and Thrive 20/20. Please continue to practice good hygiene (especially hand washing) and social distancing. These "uncertain times" now have light at the end of the tunnel, and I remain confident that we all will continue to THRIVE. Thank you and sincerely, Dr. Ryan D. Kauffman, D.C. As always, please feel free to contact me directly with any additional questions or concerns: [email protected]

At Thrive 2020, we continue to recognize the important role that our clinics play in providing health care to our communities. Please know that we are open for business during this Shelter in Place. Of course, we will continue to use all safety precautions as recommended. Therefore, we do recommend that any patient over the age of 65 and residents with chronic conditions to self-isolate at home for the next 2 weeks and return for care after April 1st. Additionally, any patient that has any symptoms such as coughing or sneezing and especially a fever (even if it is unlikely you have COVID-19) please stay at home until those symptoms have been completely gone for at least a week. While I have taken much consideration into whether or not we should remain open, I feel it's important to do what we can to help keep the hospitals and emergency rooms from being overwhelmed with neuromusculoskeletal patients. The tipping point to confirm we should stay open was when a Kaiser nurse came into the office today and thanked me so much for being open. She has to continue to work, and suffers from headaches and vertigo that we help treat. She specifically said that she could not do her job without our help. Therefore, we will be here to continue to support our community and especially the health care providers that are on the front line. Again, to review, it was announced today that individuals in six Bay Area Counties, including Santa Clara and Alameda, must shelter at their place of residence. The exception is that residence may leave for certain "essential services, as well as to receive treatment from certain health care operations. We, Thrive Milpitas and Thrive 20/20, do fall into the order of "Healthcare Operation," that can remain open. Should anything change, I will continue to update you personally. Please continue to practice good hygiene (especially hand washings). While we may feel we are at uncertain times right now, I am confident that we will all continue to THRIVE. Thank you and sincerely, Dr. Ryan D. Kauffman, D.C.

Spring Clean Your Healthy Routine Spring is an inspiring time of year when most people are motivated to clean out and tidy up their homes. Why not put some o...f that motivation towards cleaning up our health and daily routines? Here are a few ideas that will help jumpstart your healthy spring cleaning. Declutter Your Diet The winter months tend to have us craving heavier meals. Lighten up your diet by getting rid of added sugars and junk foods. Spring is an excellent time of year to shop for fresh, in-season fruits and veggies, so head out to your local farmer’s market and stock up. And don’t forget about your water intake. As the weather warms up, our bodies sweat more, which means we’ll need to replace those lost fluids with more water. Freshen Up Your Exercise Routine Use the new season as an excuse to step outside and enjoy nature more often. Walking and hiking are practical, low-impact cardiovascular exercises that almost anyone can perform. And, as an added bonus, you’ll get a beneficial dose of Vitamin D. If you’re a seasoned runner, be sure to check your shoes to determine if they need to be replaced (most running shoes have a lifespan of 300-500 miles). If you’re wondering how much exercise is the right amount, click here (http://bit.ly/2Zcfkxv) to review the current recommendations for daily activity. Air Out Your Mind Unplug from your devices and practice mindfulness to help manage your stress. Use this infographic (http://bit.ly/2ImLAbT ) to learn more about mind-body relaxation practices. If you don’t already have a healthy bedtime and sleep routine, now is a great time to start. Experts recommend that adults strive for 7-8 hours of sleep each night. And while you’re tidying up your home, don’t forget about the medicine cabinet. When possible, look for natural alternatives to over-the-counter symptom relievers. For example, conservative care (like chiropractic) is a proven-effective treatment for managing muscle and joint pain. (Learn more about how chiropractic is helping to combat the opioid crisis here http://bit.ly/2Zfux0D ) Lastly, make sure to schedule Check-Ups on your to-do list. If it’s been a while since you’ve visited your doctor, dentist, or chiropractor, give them a call this Spring.

Learn the signs and symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis, plus what you can do for relief. Your Achilles tendon is the strong fibrous band of tissue that connects ...your calf muscles to your heel. The tendon is named after Achilles who was a powerful, yet vulnerable warrior in Greek mythology. Likewise, our Achilles tendon, being the largest and strongest tendon in the body, is susceptible to injury from the high demands placed on it. (Running can generate forces over 12 times your body weight on the Achilles tendon.) The tendon may be strained or even ruptured from excessive stretch or forceful contraction of the calf muscles. More commonly, the tendon is repeatedly overloaded and suffers tiny micro tears. Damage usually occurs either directly behind the heel, or near the weakest area of the tendon- one to two inches above the heel. Achilles tendon injuries affect between 250,000 and 1 million people per year. Most are middle-aged males, between the age of 30 and 50. Interestingly, Achilles tendon injuries occur more frequently on the left side. If you have suffered a prior Achilles tendon injury, you are at greater risk of injuring the opposite side. Two-thirds of all Achilles tendon injuries involve athletes. Runners are up to 10 times more likely to suffer Achilles tendon problems. You may at increased risk if the arch of your foot is too high or too flat. Symptoms may begin abruptly following a strain but more commonly develop slowly from repeated irritation. Morning pain and stiffness are common. Your symptoms will likely increase with activity, especially walking or running. You may notice pain when you rise up on your toes. Walking down stairs stretches the tendon and usually increases symptoms. Some patients notice that the irritated area becomes firmly swollen. Ongoing irritation to the spot on your heel where the tendon inserts can cause a painfully elevated pump bump. Research has shown that conservative care, like the type provided in this office, can produce excellent results in over 85% of patients. Initially, you may need to limit or stop activities that cause pain. Runners may need to switch to swimming or cycling for a short period of time. Be sure to introduce new activities slowly and avoid increasing your activity by more than 10% per week. Runners should begin on a smooth, shock-absorbent surface and start at a low intensity first increasing distance, then pace. Avoid training on hard or unlevel surfaces like hills. Make sure you warm up properly and avoid over training. And avoid wearing high heels or shoes with an excessively rigid heel tab. If you experience any of these symptoms, give our office a call.
