The Village in Oakland #feedthepeople 04.07.2021

Many of us have been taught to judge the safety and quality of a neighborhood based on the amount of VISIBLE trash and litter. And by extension, we associate th...ose same characteristics of cleanliness and filth with the people living in that neighborhood. "This place looks trashy, so there must be trashy people living nearby." We're told to stay away from areas that look "rundown" because the people living in that area are somehow more "sketchy" and more likely to be criminals, whereas the neighborhoods with perfectly landscaped lawns and gum-free sidewalks are safe and family friendly. This is wrong. Dirty streets do NOT = dirty people Dirty streets = the long-term result of local politicians and failed systems neglecting the community. For starters, we need to understand that in our current Capitalistic system, humans generate unfathomable amounts of trash and waste every single minute. From our plastic bags and styrofoam plates to cheap electronics and Amazon boxes, Americans depend on a robust waste management system to CONSTANTLY transport our garbage from one part of town to another landfill located in a poorer part of town -- which will eventually be picked up and dumped again in an even more disadvantaged country. Next, we have the inconsistent waste management service that low-income neighborhoods receive. Like this post said: the number of trash cans located in your city, and the frequency that they're replaced, is also a deliberate decision. It was a CHOICE to put only one trashcan at the local park, and it was a CHOICE to limit the city's waste management budget so it only gets taken out once a month. When you follow all these unfortunate choices, you're left with a major health hazard because the city doesn't care about marginalized communities or the associated health risks. All of this is going on in the background, but the only thing bootlickers can say is, "iF tHeY cArEd, tHeYd pIcK uP tHe tRaSh tHeMsElVeS!"

please come to the new Cardboard & Concrete Art Exhibit at the Asian Resource Center in Oakland Chinatown. Opening night is June 18th. We are so thankful to Greg Morizumi, one of the co-founders of East Side Arts Alliance for working with us on this exhibit. after our experienced of being pimped by Pro Arts, it was a breath of fresh air to work with him. on another topic - let me say - its really sad how many people are scared of homeless people and are scared by the art we ...make. its too controversial. its too uncomfortable. well I think that thousands of people living in squallor on the streets of gentrified oakland is more controversial and uncomfortable than any piece of art. COVID protocols will be strictly enforced - wear a mask, you and/or you pod of people must stay 6 ft apart other people/pods, and limited number of people allowed in the gallery at once. light food and beverages will be provided. Artists will be available to meet, talk to, and purchase art works from.

Village supporters we need help! For the past year we have been running our administrative offices and programs all out of a hotel room in west oakland cuz a hotel room is all we could find!!!. We've been looking for a legit office/programming space or even an empty lot we can build modular units on for each of our admin and programmatic needs. However the rents are way above our budget or once people find out we serve unhoused folks they dont want to rent to us. Do you have... or know of a storefront space we can use for: - administration offices for the overall organization and admin for our 10 programs/services (except for our educational programs and art/media collectives all our programs occur directly in the streets/curbside communities) -classroom space for our Streetsmarts program and Fight The Power program - artist studio/production studio for the Cardboard and Concrete Collective and our Word on The Curb media program - storage for our Feed The People food distribution program - a parking lot or street parking for our program/service vehicles (2 passenger vehicles, a former fed ex truck for our feed the people program, a box truck that is used by multiple programs, a big rig for our tiny house building program). We need something accessible for the public and large enuf for everything (at least 800 to 1,000 square feet. Our current space is not accessible to the public like we need it to be and is only 500 square feet). Our budget is $800-1000 per month Please call 510-355-7010 and ask for Needa if you have properties you would be interested in renting to us. We can commit to long term leases.
