San Francisco Produce Market 16.11.2020

We are proud to announce that The SF Market has officially recovered and donated over 4 million pounds of food since Fall 2016! At a time when there is an urgent need to address systemic food shortages and serve community needs during the coronavirus, our Food Recovery Program has expanded food access across the Bay Area with 4 million pounds of fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, and prepared meals diverted from landfills. Led by the dedicated efforts of Carolyn Lasa...r, food recovered by The SF Market is connected to organizations throughout the Bay Area. Grassroots community leaders feeding seniors and children, homeless individuals and families at our neighborhood navigation center, local Food Pharmacies, and many others have received fresh, healthy food through this innovative program. We were honored to receive this wonderful message from Mrs. Ruth Mays, Chef at Third Baptist Church San Francisco, an essential community partner in our "Food is Medicine CV-19 Emergency Response Program" providing meals and groceries to isolated seniors. "This weekend's meals received fabulous reviews. Hamburgers on Saturday and Sunday baked chicken, black-eyed peas with rice and steamed okra, candied yams, and cornbread. This is an actual response. 'PERFECTO! The dinner is ...melting in my mouth with delight and glee!' I try to give the seniors something they have not had in a long time or food that reminds them of where they grew up. Of course, every recipe has been modified with only healthy ingredients. The kiwi berry was very popular because no one was familiar with this fruit but pleasantly surprised with its taste. We had a great driver on Friday, he whizzed in and out of the Fellowship Hall like a pro. He was very friendly, too.' The SF Market, Earl's Organic Produce, and Arcadios produce Inc have been working with Third Baptist since April. By the end of December, Third Baptist will have distributed over 7500 meals and 3600 bags of organic produce to their community members. Third Baptist is a leader in the African American Faith-Based Coalition making sure that isolated and under-resourced African American seniors are getting fresh, healthy food. We are proud to support this good work during challenging times.

In our ongoing commitment to providing critical food infrastructure for our merchants, the City of San Francisco and the Bay Area food community, last Tuesday’s Board of Director’s meeting approved an important step in implementing/building the next phase of the SF Market’s Reinvestment Project with the decision on the scope for our next building. 1901 Jerrold Avenue will be a state-of-the-art produce facility that provides increased space and improved features to support our... current and future merchants’ growth in the next era of produce distribution in San Francisco. We are honored to continue the legacy of providing a platform that launches new produce businesses, creates stable jobs, and connects farmers and growers throughout California to essential food businesses throughout the Bay Area. . . We have been incredibly inspired by the people we see going above and beyond to help each other during this challenging time, and we are grateful to be working side by side with dedicated community groups to help feed San Franciscans. When food insecurity became increasingly urgent as a result of COVID-19, the San Francisco Department of Public Health quickly responded to support The SF Market's "Food is Medicine CV-19 Emergency Response Program" with Sugary Drinks Distribut...or Tax Funds through June. This support gave community groups on the ground the resources to quickly and effectively serve the needs of thousands of San Franciscans. Due to the compelling success of the program, The SF Market was selected by the Crankstart Foundation for a generous grant to continue this work through the end of the year! --- This important partnership with Crankstart will support The SF Market in leveraging our infrastructure and resources, along with our merchant businesses and multiple San Francisco nonprofits, to provide thousands of meals and grocery bags containing fresh produce and staples to under-resourced San Francisco residents. The Food is Medicine program aligns with our mission to provide a platform for growth for our merchants, including securing local jobs and business, and to make a positive impact on the community. --- By the end of 2020, the Food is Medicine CV-19 Emergency Response Program will provide: --75,000 bags of healthy, culturally appropriate food (60,000 of which Crankstart is making possible) --200,000 meals made by churches, restaurants, and culinary training programs to serve to their communities (150,000 of which Crankstart is making possible) See a list of our partners and participating merchants: https://www.thesfmarket.org/emergency-food-program
