Captain John Treasure Jones commanded the final voyage from Southampton to Long Beach. Several old red London buses and telephone boxes were strapped to the decks for the passage to America. Many passengers boarded the buses as the ship passed around Cape Horn to say they have traveled round by a London bus.

Today's #QMFromHome lesson is all about the Queen Mary's propellers. The Queen Mary had four propellers, each weighing 32 tons. At cruising speed they would spin at 172 RPM that's nearly three times a second! If the propellers were to be stopped, the ship would still travel forward for 15 miles as it slowed down and came to a stop.

Have you visited The Cunard Story, the newest exhibition aboard the Queen Mary? Tangible artifacts such as these stand as a vibrant reminder of voyaging in the Queen Mary. A Benson’s candy tin like this one found fame in the feature film, The Shawshank Redemption.

In 1935, as the Queen Mary took shape on the Clyde, a restaurant, originally known the Bodega Spanish wine cellar built in 1874, was refitted in the same Art Deco style and a Glasgow legend known today as Rogano, was born. Charles Cameron Baillie, designer of the stained glass features in the Queen Mary, was appointed to design the restaurant’s interior and to paint a fantasy seascape mural onto walnut at Rogano. Legend has it that the foremen building the Queen Mary in the John Brown shipyard paid their bar bills at Rogano with lengths of burr walnut and bird's eye maple panelling specified for the liner! Have you ever visited @roganoglasgow?

Today on #NationalNursesDay, and everyday, we say thank you to the brave nurses whose passion and dedication do not go unnoticed. It’s because of them that so many lives are saved - a caring soul and helping hand leads to healing. Let’s give it up for all those heroes!
