OOPS! Your Personality Type is Showing. The differences between the four core personality types are readily apparent when the four types are given the same task to complete. Why? Because how they go about completing or attempting to complete the task is a direct reflection of their personalities. And it’s also quite amusing!... For example, at a presentation I was once giving to a large group, I separated them into the four core personality types with which they had already been identified. These four types are based on the True Colors methodology by Don Lowry. They’re identified as Gold, Blue, Green and Orange. I then gave each group a tangram along with the instructions to provide me with a square and that the exercise had a time limit. A tangram is a traditional Chinese puzzle made up of a square divided into seven pieces. It includes a parallelogram, a square and five triangles. These pieces can then be arranged into specific designs. How did the four groups of personality types respond? The Gold types immediately found the center square and pointed it out. Golds are one and done. They value common sense and a right way to do everything. The Blue types value everyone’s opinion and called for a consensus. They failed to meet the deadline by placing more importance on inclusion. That’s a Blue. They value relationships and interaction with people. The Green types asked for clarification of what exactly I wanted. Was it make you a square or give you a square? I said to provide me with a square. Ultimately, they were able to complete an entire square within the allotted time. So Green. They value intellectual competence and achievement. The Orange types arranged the pieces into ducks, houses and a multitude of other items other than a square. It was more fun than making a square. Fun-loving Oranges. They value freedom and thrive on humor and fun. Afterwards, everyone had a better understanding of how our personality type is reflected in our actions. Also, they saw how easy it is to see someone else’s personality type in that person’s actions. Sometimes, it really is quite easy to understand another person’s behavior if you take the time to look. But, it definitely helps to know the different personality types and their motivations. And it’s always good for a great laugh! We certainly did.
