Here in the states we’re in a very soft phase of hair. And looks are primarily focused around layering techniques. But there is still so much misunderstanding and unfortunately alot of misteachings on what layering actually is. We hear silly terms like ghost layers or invisible layering for layers that are not visibleuhhh... I remember when those we just called well done layers . Layers give you the diversity of wearing your hair sleek and lean or with a textured... aesthetic look if tousled or styled that way. In other works visible or not when you want. We also see when vertical section are taken and the scissors just widdle or slice through the middle insides of the sections and then call that internal layering. Truth is that is not layering at all, that is just texturing. And fyi, ALL layers are internal... Layers are a particular silhouette of weight created in the hair based around the 3 types of layers that exist: flat, convex and concave. All layers are one of those 3. Layers create softness and movement. They create texture in hair contrary to the belief that texture is solely created by pointing or chopping into the hair. Layers give you versatility on how you can wear/style your hair. So a strong technical understanding of layers is vital for 2 reasons... to give you control over looks you want to create and more importantly not to be fooled by silly tricks and misteachings of what layers truly are... From the first time I walked into that building to start my training to the last time I walked out those doors as an educator there this place has and will always have its own place in my heart. Every possible emotion I experience there. For better or worse it was always the right place to be at the right time. Thank you to all those who guided me and trained me. Thank you to those who gave me the opportunity to be an educator there and trusted me enough to head up the Miami Academy before returning back to this building. The foundation of who and what I am as an educator today was laid inside these walls. Everyone who was ever a part of what was created there should be proud because it will never be replicated ever again...

Unfortunately this is an all to common realty not just with clients but with stylists as well. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had students ask me to teach them how to do these trendy textured beachy waves haircuts and I have to explain to them that those looks have nothing to with haircutting at all. You can take the worst haircut in the world and make it look like that because it’s all curling iron styling work. And it can hide a lot. It’s also the reason so many Ins...ta famous stylists who just curl hair and style beautifully have gotten to be popular and famous for being hair cutters. This is also the reason the whole dry haircutting and taking vertical sections and just point cutting the ends has become thought of as how you create these looks because it’s just followed up by curling iron work. I tell anyone who asks me to teach them these messy beachy textured looks to save their money and just get on YouTube or these insta famous stylits’ IGTV tutorials and learn how to curl and wave hair. And when they’re ready to truly learn to cut hair to book with me again. Ultimately, the goal is to learn to cut hair beautifully. After that the styling part is easy. But we should never force clients to have to style their hair to make it look good. If so, is that really a good haircut? See more
