From Dr. Laureen Bartfield Dvm Some thoughts on Ulcers and Horses Peer reviewed research shows that nearly 90% of race horses and 60% of show horses have gastric ulcers. 50% of foals, 37% of "recreational horses" and 50% of donkeys are said to suffer from gastric ulcers. Are the horses that we see sold over and over because they "have issues" just suffering from ulcers?? The ones that ultimately wind up at an auction and find themselves on a truck to Mexico....How many hor...ses just learn to "wear it" - they just shut down and go on because it's easier. They have accepted the pain and they just soldier on. For my friends and my clients - I urge you to consider scoping your horse if he/she runs a fence line, weaves, cribs, lip smacks, grinds teeth, changes in attitude, changes in appetite, refusal to perform or decreased performance, cinchiness, increased fear, weight loss, colic, and the list goes on. If you think something is wrong, then you may just be right. And you owe it to your horse, your partner, to be sure that they feel good when they are with you. It's what is fair and it's what is right.
