The year was 1937. For the class, Kennedy had chosen a topic about a Supreme Court nominee. According to the New York Times, The speech starts off strong. He speaks clearly and with vigor. But after about 25 seconds, Kennedy loses his momentum. He gets nervous or distracted. He trips over a word, utters an uh as he tries to recover. He stammers and hesitates through the rest of the recording. Kennedy received a C+ in the course. ... It’s remarkable to think about. The leader who would go on to deliver one of the greatest speeches of the century just two decades later barely passed his first public speaking class. Kennedy was not originally an effective public speaker, Logevall told me. In fact, he was quite fearful of the prospect. It was not something that came naturally to him. He trained himself to be able to address small groups and then larger groups. Feedback is also hard to get without eye contact, which is the easiest way to engage with an audience and reel them into whatever you’re saying. But platforms like Zoom make this difficult, so North suggests you scan the participants' faces from time to time so you can measure their reactions. The problem is that doing that will only work for you, so don’t forget to take turns looking straight at the camera, as this will make it seem like you’re looking each member of your audience in the eyes. Staring at that black dot on the top of your screen is neither the easiest thing to do, nor the most inspiring, but it’s the fastest and most effective way to connect even when we’re apart.

We are super excited to start our 6th summer camp as the Golden State Academy. We are also super happy to announce based on feedback and inquiries, that we are introducing an early evening weekly option of classes. Beginner students are invited to take one speech and one debate class each week (there are several options or combinations you can choose from). Returning students or those with more than a year of experience and can demonstrate this, can join our intermediate and ...advanced courses. These classes will be either speech or debate and they will meet twice a week as well. Anyone interested in doing speech and debate will have to contact us to give them the best recommendation of how to sign up for both as a returning student/experienced student. If you all have any questions, please call or email us. We will have open houses as well.
