While most of our students have returned to campus for in-person classes, some of our students continue to learn remotely from home. They are able to participate in many of their classes and their classmates can see them in class on the big screen TVs we’ve set up like projectors for better resolution in our outdoor classrooms. Our lower school classes study a different artist each month. Last month Fourth Grade studied artist Diego Rivera. Students learned about his many styles of art from cubism to his large murals. Rivera painted simple figures of Mexico's indigenous people doing everyday things like selling flowers. To recreate Rivera's "Mother's Helper" the students followed drawing directions from the teacher using pencil and later added a black outline using chalk or pen. TCPS students can learn about all sorts of things in Spanish class! Recognizing October is National Apple Month, Kindergartners learned all about the life cycle of an apple or manzana in Spanish. At the end of the unit students shared illustrations they made of the apple lifecycle showing their favorite color apples. In 4th grade history class students learned about the migration of early man and their journey to the continent of North America. Students were asked to create their very own "Bravery Shield" at home. They referred to Native American artistic depictions of birds which are said to symbolize strength in some Native American tribes and included a bird on their bravery shields. Frequently we look to artistic expression for students to show their understanding and as a creative outlet. A special visitor dropped in for a (thankfully virtual) visit this week in K and 1st grade, an Annulated tree boa from the rainforest (via @sandiegozoo)! Kindergarten is currently studying reptiles and will be studying the Amazon Rainforest all year long, and First Grade is currently creating habitat books and studying the rainforest. Annulated boas are found in the rainforests of Central and South America so it fit in nicely with our current areas of study! Arts education is a crucial component in developing a well-rounded student as well as joy in learning. Arts impact so many areas of education: math, reading, cognitive ability, creative thinking, motivation, concentration, and much more. We look for opportunities for our students to be artistic often and they study a new artist each month. Second grade is studying the artist Romero Britto, a Brazilian artist who uses bright colors and bold patterns to express hope, dreams and happiness. 6th grade always starts the year in history by learning about archaeology and uncovering artifacts. Recently they got to become archaeologists! Students researched proper tools to prepare them to be successful in an excavation. Each student received an archaeological dig site from somewhere around the world. Second grade recently finished reading the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. In the story, a young boy named Stanley gets flattened by a bulletin board during the night. Once flat, he travels, fights crime, and goes on adventures taking full advantage of his new size. For our classroom project, each student dressed and decorated their very own Flat Student today. The kids are responsible for taking Stanley around their neighborhood to soccer practice, dance class, Grandma’s ...house, etc. The next goal is for each child to send their Flat Student to a close friend or relative who lives in a different part of the state, country, or world. The person who receives our Flat Student should be willing to take a few pictures with him at places in their community, and perhaps send post cards, maps or some type of memorabilia from the area, and then return him to the child (or perhaps send him on another adventure). This will be a great way for each student to learn about different parts of the world! Our 8th graders started their first history unit with early exploration and learned about some of the navigational tools used by these seafaring explorers. Each student created their very own navigational tool using simple supplies such as a paper protractor, ruler, string, and tape. They put them to the test and found that the simple tool they made was able to provide a remarkably accurate latitude reading by aiming at the North Star (Polaris) in addition to making a simple... calculation. We had an exciting first week of school! Each class shared lessons and activities as they got to know one another and welcomed new students. Here kids are engaged as Kindergarteners enjoyed making first day of school picture frames and created shoe graphs, First graders made and shared their Lion masks with their classmates, middle schoolers made word bubbles to display the goals they have for the year, and much more.
