Happy #fosterfriday! Today's featured foster pup came to us all the way from Thailand via Soi Dog Foundation. Primmy was placed into foster 2 weeks ago to help her out of her shell, and it clearly worked because Primmy already has a promising play date lined up for this weekend! "Primmy has made so much progress in two weeks in foster! For the first three days, she shook and paced around the living room. We would pick her up and pet her to try to help her relax. After about t...hree days, she slowly started jumping on the couch with us on her own, pacing and shaking less and she finally started eating her food! She loves to go on walks and she is great on a leash. She also LOVES our SOI pup Koda, and she tries to lay on top of her, kiss her, and follow her around. She hasn’t had any accidents in our home, and she has been left alone up to eight hours when we work. Now that it has been two weeks, she isn’t pacing and shaking anymore, but she is still a flight risk and nervous with new things, and she likes to hang out by the front door. She loves stuffed animals, cuddling on our laps, chicken treats, and sprawling out on the couch! Two days ago, she ran to us for the first time to put her leash on! She is such a sweet girl, and we’re so proud of her for all her progress in such a short amount of time!" It's a true testament to the power of fostering. Wish Primmy luck this weekend! #fosterdog #startedfromthailandnowshehere #adoptprimmy

It's #wherearetheynowwednesday and we have another cute alumnus lined up for you! This is Rocket, who ended up keeping his TBL name. He was rescued from a San Bernardino shelter in December 2019 and found his furever home just 2 weeks later. We recently got an update from his adoptive mom: "I am writing about our little dude Rocket whom we adopted on January 6th, 2020. It's been a little over a year since we adopted him, and wow how it’s flown by! Rocket will be 3 years young... this Saturday which is so exciting! He's a rambunctious little guy who continues to blossom daily. LOVES food and is such a scavenger whenever we are out on walks. He always tends to find any little snack left behind on the sidewalks, it's pretty funny. Rocket has already been on a few flights and did so well on the plane. Rocket is a BIG mommas boy and whenever I'm around he is attached to my hip... Dad gets a little jealous He is our little adventure bud traveling wherever we go. He doesn’t like the ocean, but loves the bay and warmer waters. Our favorite is when it’s time for bed and he jumps up on the bed and gets under the covers with us. He is just the best! We started an instagram for him to share his pictures." Thank you Johanna for sending in this great pupdate! You can follow Rocket's adventures on Instagram at @silly.rocket. Does your TBL alum also have his or her own Insta these days? If you haven't written to us yet for WATNW, please email an update with your adoption story and favorite photos to [email protected] so we can feature your alum! #watnw #dapperdog #happydoghappylife

Barkers #26-32!

The Barking Lot 11.11.2020

It's #wherearetheynowwednesday and today's featured TBL alum is a world-traveling doggo! This is Timmi, pka Alabama. He is originally from Thailand and came to San Diego through our partnership with Soi Dog Foundation. He was adopted a week later by one of our own volunteers. Though he is now a permanent resident of North America, Timmi has also enjoyed European vacations in Norway! "I adopted Timmi in January 2018. I was working an adoption shift as a volunteer at TBL when h...e arrived from Soi Dog Foundation Thailand. He stole my heart and came home with me Toys were a new experience, but with some guidance from doggie friend Smokey Bear he figured it out and tearing off ears and get all the stuffing out of toys are now one of his favorite activities. He has become quite a globetrotter, from Thailand to San Diego, family Christmas vacations in Norway (snow was a big hit) and now living big city life in LA with his doggie sister and bestie Nahla! It’s a very long flight to Norway, and he wasn’t a fan even tho he flew with me in cabin, so probably not taking him back for a while . For now, he can see snow in big bear LOL. He also looooves the beach, belly rubs and all the treats he can get. Forever grateful to TBL for the work you do and especially bringing Timmi into my life!" Thank you Bergitte for this awesome update! Timmi has probably been on more continents than the average person For those who have yet to participate in WATNW, we'd love to hear about your TBL alum! Email your story and favorite photos to [email protected] be featured! #watnw #startedfromthailandnowhehere #happydoghappylife

It should go without saying that dogs are not disposable, and they should be treated as a valued member of the family. The subjects of today's #transformationtuesday didn't have the best start in life, but we're glad to have played a part in changing that! This is the story of how we ended up with the sibling pair Niamey and Helsinki. When these pups were just a few months old, they were discarded like garbage in front of a convenience store. The attendant at the store saw a ...car stop, drop a burlap sack, then drive away. There were 2 little puppies inside the bag. They were so fearful of humans, they cowered in a corner whenever they were touched or approached. The attendant moved them temporarily to a cardboard box and posted them to social media for help. Our local rescue partner saw the post, answered their plea, and arranged for them to come to The Barking Lot in search of a better future. We gladly took them and watched them slowly thrive around regular volunteers and new dog friends. Niamey was adopted about 2 weeks after arriving at TBL, and her brother Helsinki found his furever home too a few days later! #beforeandafter #dogsarenotdisposable #dogsarefamily See more

The guesses are in and it's time for the big reveal! Earlier today, we posted photos of Moose, our Mystery Mutt of the week. We had you guess her 7 different breeds, which are... ...drumroll... ...German Shepherd Dog, Doberman Pinscher, American Pit Bull Terrier, Cocker Spaniel, Rottweiler, Chow Chow, and Belgian Malinois! Talk about a supermutt indeed. Great job to Sharon for getting 7 out of 7 - this is probably a MMM record! In any case, we can agree that Moose is 100% adorable. As an all-breed rescue, we love every dog, regardless of their genetic background. Don't forget to email your results and photos to [email protected] if you DNA test your TBL alum! #mysterymuttmonday #supermutt #rescuedisourfavoritebreed

The Barking Lot 06.10.2020

Welcome to the first #mysterymuttmonday of November! Today's Mystery Mutt is Moose, pka Rogue, who came to us from Mexico in May. She was adopted a little over a week after her arrival and her adoptive family decided to do DNA testing. Turns out, Moose is a supermutt, and we were completely wrong about what we thought she was! Not 1 of the 7 detectible breeds is what we listed her as Can you guess all the breeds she's mixed with based on these clues about their defining phy...sical traits? 1. This dog has a heavy shedding double coat most commonly in black-and-tan 2. Though born with floppy ears and long tails, this short-coated breed is most well-known for pointy upright ears and docked tails 3. A medium-sized muscular dog with short coat that comes in virtually any color combination 4. A sturdy and compact dog with feathered fur around the ears, belly and legs 5. A large dog with a short, high-shedding coat, prominant "eyebrows", and a high tendency for drooling 6. A very fluffy dog that can have not only blue tongues, but blue noses too 7. A mostly tan dog with a black mask and large perky ears Moose currently weighs around 35 pounds at 11 months old. What do you think she is? Comment with your guesses and we'll post the results for you later tonight. In the meantime, if you DNA-tested your TBL alum, don't forget to share your results with [email protected]! #muttcrushmonday #mondayfunday #doggieDNA

The Barking Lot 12.08.2020

Happy #fosterfriday! We have a great pup lined up for you to meet today. This is Funafuti and he is looking for a forever home! Handsome Funafuti came to us from Mexico where he was found running scared among heavy traffic on the highway near the University of Baja campus. He was very thin and infested with fleas. He had a piece of wire around his neck as a collar. It was surmised that he likely escaped from a life of neglect and abuse. We noticed right away that Funafuti is ...very shy, skittish, and nervous around new people. We also noticed how he started to slowly bond with regular volunteers over time, so we knew he just needed the right environment to thrive. He was placed into a foster home to do just that, and he's doing great! Here's an update from his foster mom: "He is doing so great in foster and really starting to blossom. He is progressing every day. He is now confident enough to eat from his dog bowls on the floor, comes when he is called, and likes to cuddle his foster parents. He does a cute yoga stretch on my shoulders every morning. Everyday he surprises me with something new. He likes to wait by my feet while I get ready. He doesn’t like the crate so we are just now trying to see if he is house trained. He had a few accidents his first days but lately he’s been better. He doesn’t know any tricks but we are working on it as well as leash skills. He loves his walks and now showing he is quite a good runner with a 4-mile run the other day. We took him on his first restaurant adventure and he felt at home with the Latina hits He’s still scared of males and needs a good leash handler because he can get skiddish. He’s very sweet and wants love, he’s just shy and still fearful. His 'safe space' is the couch and bed so he will need a home that doesn’t mind a dog on furniture. He needs a patient home to work with his fears. He is gentle and good with all dogs!" Funafuti is about a year and a half and a great medium size of 47 pounds. He is looking for patient people who can show him what it's like to be safe and loved. If that sounds like you, please apply! #fosterdog #scaredycatdog #adoptfunafuti

Frontier says: we love donations! For #thankfulthursday today, we would like to say thank you to our friends at Nylabone for donating a big box of their power chew bones. Adoptable pooch Frontier was first to volunteer to be quality control officer. All Nylabone products are USA-made and veterinarian-recommended for promoting good canine dental hygiene, to occupy and entertain, discourage destructive chewing, reduce stress, and strengthen the bond between pets and their peopl...e. Frontier gives them a solid paws-up! Don't forget Frontier is still looking for his furever home. He can be grumpy with other dogs and has leash reactivity. If you can provide him with the training he needs to become his best self, Frontier will be the sweetest, snuggliest, and most loyal companion for any lucky family. For now, he's enjoying his new toy. Thanks again, Nylabone! #nylabone #dogapproved #adoptfrontier See more

Happy #wherearetheynowwednesday from Zeppelin! She was known as Agyness in her former life at The Barking Lot circa fall 2016. She went from being at risk of euthanasia at a shelter in San Jacinto to living her best life in San Diego. Thank you for bringing Zeppelin into my life! Zeppelin was adopted on 12/3/2016 and has thrived in her home. She’s a very active and playful girl - she runs every day with me (4-6 miles) and has gone as far as 14! She’s extremely food motivate...d and starts drooling instantly at the sight of any potential snack. I still recall the time she met my friend’s golden doodle for the first time - she sat patiently, as if she was waiting for a treat, licked her lips, and starting drooling! We were convinced she thought he was a dog sized chicken nugget. She’s a goofball and very needy - she does not like being alone, but is extremely easy going as long as someone is nearby to keep her company. One of her favorite things to do is stare at people. Zeppelin falls asleep within seconds of finding a cozy spot and is the best snuggler! Thank you Justin for this great pupdate! For those who have yet to participate in WATNW, we'd love to hear from you. Email [email protected] to have your TBL alum featured! #watnw #foreverhome #happydoghappylife

The Barking Lot 11.07.2020

For #transformationtuesday today, we bring you the story of another one of our rescues who had her life change for the better when a good samaritan intervened. This is Kampala! She had a "family", but they kept her outside by the sidewalk all day and night. She was neglected and seldom given any food, water, or shelter. At the time of her rescue, Kampala was underweight, mangy, infested with fleas and ticks, and missing spots of fur with a wound on her belly. A neighbor of th...is household noticed Kampala and took pity on her, and pleaded to our local rescue partner to get her relinquished. Kampala was networked to us in San Diego so she can look for a better family and future. That's exactly what she found 2 weeks after her arrival at TBL this summer! All the best to this sweet girl! #beforeandafter #dogsarefamily #thelivestheydeserve See more

The guesses are in and it's time for the big reveal! Earlier today, we posted photos of Mystery Mutt Milly and had you guess her top 6 breeds, which are... ...drumroll... ...American Pit Bull Terrier, German Shepherd Dog, Rottweiler, Labrador Retriever, Boxer, and Cocker Spaniel! Honorable mention goes out to Sharon for getting 5 out of 6 correct - who knew Rotties are the biggest snorers? All the same, we can agree that Milly is 100% adorable!
