Destination Crenshaw featured The Los Angeles Standard Newspaper Owner and Publisher Jason Lewis in their Faces of Black LA series. #FacesofBlackLA Meet Jason Douglas Lewis, owner and publisher of LA Standard Newspaper. Jason grew up near Crenshaw Blvd. and Washington Blvd., graduated from Fairfax High School and UCLA UCLA Arts, and is a writer and a photographer who produces positive content regarding Black communities in Los Angeles. His articles range from topics around f...ellow Angelenos, small businesses, and community service programs in our neighborhoods that have made great contributions to our city but have not received much media spotlight. It is important to Jason that he highlights positive images of Black LA in his paper because those stories often get overshadowed in favor of negative news like crime, unemployment, or poor education. His goal is to change the perspective that Black people live in war zones and use his platform as the runner of a local Black media outlet to find stories that combat that narrative. To Jason, Black LA is home. "Black folks in LA are awesome, and everyone should know that! The Los Angeles Standard Newspaper is extremely community driven. I love it when people flip through the newspaper and see people who they know, places that they go, and learn something new about something or someone in their neighborhood. Black LA is home. The Lewis family has been in Los Angeles for over 100 years. I've lived the bulk of my life on Crenshaw and I'm not planning on leaving. I love the Black people and the Black culture in this city." OneUnited Bank CEO Kevin Cohee discusses how Black communities can obtain social justice and close the wealth gap by putting their money in Black-owned banks. OneUnited Bank has a branch on Crenshaw Blvd., just south of Obama Blvd. The average Black family in the U.S. is worth about $17,000, while the average White family is worth about $177,000. Financial education can close that gap. We can eliminate that by teaching Black Americans how to do one single transaction such ...as a purchase of a single-family home, how to understand what insurance is and how to buy it, or doing something more prosperous such as investing in multi-family housing, Cohee said. If you’re not banking Black, me and you can’t have a conversation, Michael Render, also known as Killer Mike GTO, said. Because you can’t tell me to care about Black-on-Black violence; you can’t tell me to care about police-on-Black violence; you can’t tell me you care about the conditions of your community; if you’re a preacher you can’t tell me that Jesus loves my community, if you are not putting your money where Black people are putting their money. If you do not have $100 in a Black bank account, you can’t talk to me about Michael Jordans; about Black history. You can’t talk to me about who is discriminating against you at your job. You can’t talk to me about the Lord really loving me, because you are not putting your money where your mouth is. The Los Angeles Standard Newspaper
