It is with a great deal of sadness that we inform you that Ms. Josette Temple, the daughter of Walter P. Temple, the founder of our City and the last Temple, passed away yesterday morning at the age of 83. Josette was a lovely person, and she attended as many General Membership Meetings as she could, supporting the Society with her presence as well as book signings of "Gentle Artist Of The San Gabriel Valley: California Preserved Through The Life And Paintings Of Walter P. Temple Jr." published in 2004. We will miss her smiling face, and the joy she shared simply by being in her presence. May she rest in peace.

The tile panels in La Casa Nueva are more than just home adornments; they are beautiful examples of Mexican craftsmanship and artistry often overlooked when com...pared to other forms of architectural ornamentation. The Temples commissioned Pedro Sanchez to create three tile panels for the house. Hailing from Puebla, Mexico, his work was beautiful, representative, and idyllic. No two pieces were alike and careful attention is needed to ensure the panels remain in good condition. One such step is the simple process of removing dust from the surface of his tiles. This minor conservation technique involves the use of a soft-bristled brush and gentle strokes starting from the center of the tile, ending in a sweeping motion in the opposite direction. Though the high fired ceramic glaze on the tiles provides a barrier, an accumulation of dust and other particulates may cause abrasion issues over time if left untreated.
#FlashbackFriday 1964: William Schmidt, one of the most successful teachers at Oak Avenue School, was the state’s first blind teacher to teach sighted children.... His appointment was part of a unique Temple City Unified School District policy that brought together blind children and sighted ones in regular classrooms. When teaching math, Schmidt relied on a special overhead projector to show lessons on the wall instead of using the blackboard. He had to design most of his own material because almost nothing was available in Braille, relied on his wife and student assistants for grading help, and employed the honor system for tests. While some kids took advantage of the situation and cheated, Schmidt said there were many others who discouraged the cheats and kept the others in line. See more
