When coming up with names with my wife for our youngest son, for some reason I loved the name Brighton. I couldn’t place why or where it came from. I didn’t know anyone named that. It was a complete mystery how the name was even in my consciousness. Returning to the Bay Area five years ago finally gave me clarity as I glanced up at the street sign where I used to surf as a kid. There it was. Spelled exactly the same way. I can’t recall ever looking at that sign as a ki...d. We didn’t call the surf break Brighton. It was just somewhere in my brain, floating around with the numerous joyful memories at that beach. When I try to describe the impact surfing has on those who surf, I sometimes end up using this story to explain it. Despite it being a mediocre explanation, it illustrates a deep seeded connection we all have to those happy times we spend in the water. - Funny, Cliff never made the naming list. Maybe because of the Cheers sitcom. - (And I love the cameo from an @asucamp sticker - the best Indo camp finding its way all the way across here - and I didn’t place it there ) See more

A physio that doesn’t surf would say, ‘take a few months out of the water to recover’ and wouldn’t understand the implications of being a surfer. Having that niche (as a surf physio) helps because there’s that specific knowledge of doing the activity. . Dropping In Surf Show, Episode 18 features Physiotherapist Scott Johnstone, @the_surf_physio , practicing in Gold Coast, Australia. Jim @asaltypt and Scott discuss common injury patterns, sustainable plans for body mainten...ance and recovery, rehab vs performance training, the importance of objective measurement, motor patterning, body characteristics, training for high torque turns, and preparation for surfing big waves. . Surfing is a sport that kind of meets in the middle of mobility, stability, strength, endurance, power, and the best athletes seem to combine those elements specific to their body type and use those in their maneuvers. Continuing our surf coach series, Jim @asaltypt and I sit down with Premier Del Mar, CA based surf coach Dan Mori @fulcrumsurf to talk equipment, maneuver how to's, how to progress with quality, how to react to falling, and more. Some nuggets of info from our talk: ... "That's why [the pros] ride a magic board, and then stow it away for contests." "You'll see, if it's a good board, you'll be laughing, cause you're so happy." "The direction you go down on a bottom turn will be the direction you go back up." "Have fun, don't care so much about what people are thinking. They are just caring about themselves. That kid right there doesn't care about you. He's just trying to figure out how to to get your wave, not how you look." "That's when you know for sure your liters are too much - the board pancakes out on a turn." "That's the biggest trap. Everyone looks at the top [of the wave]. Look at the bottom, the base of the wave to determine what it's going to do." "You can't skip steps to progress." Listen on iTunes, Spotify, or Google Play; watch at SurfingPaddling.com/Dropping-in-surf-show, at SaltyPT.com, or on YouTube.
