Sturtevant Camp 24.10.2020

This photo was buried in the mail for several years, and now in the light of day adds an interesting connection between this old mountain goat and Hollywood, of... all things. The photo comes by way of descendants of my younger sister Florence (Sturtevant) Cain; the writing on the back shows it was a visual reference for family folks back east about the man who went west and my wilderness camp. It goes on to make the following connections (with a little help from Wikipedia): One of my daughters was Myra Sturtevant Nye (May 12, 1875 January 28, 1955). She was a writer, journalist, and clubwoman based in Southern California, and the women's club editor and Hollywood columnist at the Los Angeles Times from 1919 to 1934. Her son was Robert Carroll Nye (October 4, 1901 March 17, 1974), an American film actor. He started as a reporter and radio editor with the Times like his mother. However, he went into film business in 1924. At the beginning of his career he had a score of leading man roles in Hollywoodperhaps most memorably as Frank Kennedy, Scarlett's second husband, in Gone With the Wind (1939). Cut & print!

#TBT Throwback Thursday: When camp was comprised of tent cabins. It has been reported that these tents were sold by Arie Hoegee, founder of Hoegee's Camp in Winter Creek, who owned and operated a sporting goods store at downtown Los Angeles.

I hiked the eight miles, round trip, to Sturtevant Camp today and was rewarded by a visit from three bears. The cubs were curious about me but mama told them to... stay near. She and I were having a nice talk but then some mountain bikers came by, hootin' and hollerin', and scared them back up the hill. Bikers never did notice the bears. Made me kinda sad that they have to be fearful in their own living room. See more
