Steinhart Aquarium Biologists at the California Academy of Sciences

A big welcome back wave from one of our newest residents- an O. cyanea, or Day octopus. Our Color of Life habitats got lots of love during the closure and we can't wait to show them off!

Some of our newest, youngest and veteran residents getting into the spirit! Biologists had fun building a candy corn forest for our Velvet ants in Venom, adding some spooky but enriching items to our rattlesnake habitat, and snapping baby's first pumpkin pic of one of our newly morphed Amazon milk froglets (aww!)

Are you ready? Biologists are working double time (or faster!) to get projects completed before the building reopens next week. Watch as the Lagoon team adds another 3,500 lbs of sand for our resident stingrays to snorkel around in!

While You Were Away Biologists have been 'sprucing up' the place in anticipation of welcoming guests back into the building. Here is Dive Officer Marina B. getting her clean on in the California Coast pop-up habitat.

We are sad to share that one of the Academy’s African penguins, affectionately known as Homey, has died due to complications from melanoma. Over the past several months, Academy biologists and veterinary staff did everything possible to treat her, including six weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Homey has been a favorite for nearly 29 years, and she will be greatly missed by the entire Academy family.

NOT the Morrison Planetarium... Aquarium staff on the living roof at 11:00 am. The marine layer isn't budging, so channel your inner pumpkin SF!

Aquarium biologists are partnering with Academy researchers as part of our Hopes for Reefs conservation initiative. Studying corals in house, like this Acropora hyacinthus, gives us a greater ability to measure the effects of climate change.
