Yanks Air Museum 21.02.2021

An arsenal of aircraft ready to take on the pages of history. How did this happen? All it takes is an amazing Photographer, pilots, staff, friends and mechanics all having a great time together. Bring on the flying.

Tony is the master of wood and fabric restorations. Yes, he makes it look easy. Interestingly the stitching varies by aircraft and is dependent on the construction, materials and speeds. As soon as all the pieces are covered including the fuselage, they will go in to paint and he does the painting too! We are lucky to have so much amazing talent here at Yanks.... #yanksairmuseum #yanksairmuseumaircollection #chino #chinoairport #inlandempire #restoration #restorationproject #laborloflove #polyfiber #master #wings #fabric #planespotting #aviationdaily #norseman #nordyn #bringingitbacktolife #keepemflying #hardwork #determination #masterofskills

What's up Wednesday. The Hellcat is up! The new fuel tanks have arrived and Steve is now working on the cradles that help to support them inside the wing cavity. #yanksairmuseum #yanksairmuseumcollection #aviationmuseum #airmuseum #chino #chinoairport #KCNO #inlandempire #Hellcat #F6F #grumman #warbird #keepemflying #history #WW2 #WWII #greatestgeneration #thegreatestgeneration #restoration #planesofWWII #WW2aviation #laborloflove #restorationproject #returningtoflight #warbirdsofamerica #warbirdlovers #warbirdstory

Warning: Painting can be hazardous to your health, especially with the P-40! Gilberto is our Master of finishes, don't worry he's just having a little fun with his touch up on the Warhawk cowling. #yanksairmuseum #chino #KCNO #inlandempire #chinoairport #warhawk #P40 #warbird #wedocoolstuff #fighter #sharkmouth #keepemflying #WWII #aviationhistory #Curtiss #allisonengine #historicaircraft #museum #aviationmuseum #airmuseum #restoration #painter #yanksairmuseumcollection #greatestgeneration #historicaircraftcollection #planesofwwii

Don't underestimate the power of belief George Patton was never one to do anything by half measures and in December 1944 as the elite 4th Armored Division spearheaded his army’s advance to the relief of Bastogne, all he really wanted was air support. Severe weather conditions grounded most flights making it impossible for allied forces to utilize their superiority in the air. Patton turned to the one man he believed who could help his army, Chaplain James Hugh O’Neill. O’Neil...l wrote the following prayer: Almighty and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee, of Thy great goodness, to restrain these immoderate rains with which we have had to contend. Grant us fair weather for Battle. Graciously hearken to us as soldiers who call upon Thee that, armed with Thy power, we may advance from victory to victory and crush the oppression and wickedness of our enemies, and establish Thy justice among men and nations. Amen. Within a short time, the weather cleared and P-47s were back in the sky providing the close air support the troops needed and helping to secure a decisive Allied victory. Chaplain O’Neill was awarded the Bronze Star. #yanksairmuseum #chino #kcno #p-47 #thunderbolt #patton #warbird #WWII #believe #aviation #horsepower #victory #prayer #history #warbirdstories #warbirdhistory #chinoairport

The museum faces many challenges. While we must engage the new, learn and grow, the talents of the past must also be shared or they will be gone forever. Welcome Randy and Sergio to the Yanks team! Please be patient with us, we know we are a quirky bunch, we think you will fit in just fine.

What's in a name? The SB2C Helldiver Between 1922 and 1962 the US Navy used a unique and somewhat complicated designation system for its aircraft. Many chose to simply call planes by their names rather than designations (i.e. Corsair instead of F4U) pilots and crew often created their own nicknames which usually referred to an aircraft's unique features and characteristics. For instance, the B-26 Marauder became known as "The Widow Maker" due to perceived high accident rates ...early in its career. Perhaps no single aircraft of the period was given more nicknames by its pilots and crews than the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver and though early opinions were not always the favorable, the Helldiver ultimately proved itself as an effective and formidable weapon. This mix of opinions is reflected in the nicknames bestowed on the Helldiver over its career. How many can you name? (Be creative if names are inappropriate to post)

At Yanks decades of knowledge and experience go into the restoration of every single piece of an aircraft. Here Tony (slightly faster than normal in video) will be recovering a control surface from the Noorduyn Norseman. There are not many who understand the art of fabric installation or the cause and effect of pressure on fabric edges and surfaces. In case you did not know, many Warbirds and other metal aircraft, used fabric on their control surfaces. Have you ever seen fabric work in process? Today you are in for a treat. #norsemen #wwII #wwiihistory #chino #yanks #artisan #lostart #avgeek #museumart #museum

OMG big trouble at Yanks today... Every year around Halloween, things get a little bit spooky around here. Upon arrival this morning Minions had befriended and morphed our P-63 oil tank into one of them. It is just another one of those aircraft restoration set backs we have to deal with regularly. #Minions #Yanks #kingcobra #chino #P63 #warbird #WWII #museum #vintageaircraft #kids #halloween2020 #universalstudios

The Grumman G-73 Mallard will be flying in from the Connie Edwards Ranch in Texas to become the newest piece in Yanks Air Museum’s extensive collection which already includes its sibling aircraft: the Grumman Widgeon, Goose and Albatross. With its first flight in 1946 the Mallard was meant to follow on the success of its predecessors but with only fifty-nine in total being built, it remains one of the rarer Grumman amphibians. Come join us on **Sunday, October 18th between 11...am and 2pm as we welcome this beautiful and elegant bird to its new home. Please check in at the Gift Shop upon arrival no earlier than 10:45am. **Dates and times are subject to change Tickets are $5.00 each. Members and Volunteers are free. Unfortunately this is an outdoor event only and the Museum is closed. You will have access to the Boneyard while you are here. COVID regulations are in place, please wear a mask and social distance.

Saving rare and historic aircraft is no easy feat. Be it decades of neglect, damage or just plain wear and tear these birds need not only talent and determination, but an amazing collection of parts, a network of suppliers and unquestionable integrity to restore and license them to fly. The Yanks crew has done it again. So many times we have been told that aircraft we have acquired "will never fly again." This is not what you tell our crew. This just takes them to another l...evel of determination. The newest challenge for them is the G-73 Mallard at the Edwards Ranch in Texas. She was one of those birds, nearly 1/2 a century since she saw the skies. She has been through a lot including an intensive inspection and many weeks of TLC and now she is ready, willing and able to fly. #g73mallard #aviationhistory #warbird #vintageaircraft #amphibious #Grumman #aviationgeek #seaplanes
