Years ago I went to Whitney because someone had an extra permit. I wanted to walk just few miles but it was so beautiful so I kept walking. Before I knew it I p...assed the trail crest sign by about 3/4 mile before I decided to head back. It was a good decision. I was quite unprepared and did not pack much water or food for the 22 miles. I think the sign must be rhetorical. What is there to burn even if one decides to cook something at 13,600'?
