It is with great sadness that we share with you that Fr. Robert Walsh '68, SJ passed away at the Sacred Heart Center in Los Gatos on Saturday, October 24th after a long bout with pancreatic cancer. Fr. Walsh served as SI's president from 2006 to 2012. A fifth-generation Californian, Fr. Walsh was born in San Francisco on Aug. 30, 1950, and reared in Westlake, where he attended Our Lady of Mercy School. He joined the Society of Jesus after graduating from SI in 1968. After hi...s ordination in 1980, Fr. Walsh served as a priest, teacher, novice director, campus minister and administrator, including at SI, where he served as campus minister in the 1980s; at Bellarmine, where he worked as assistant principal in the 1990s; at Loyola High School in Los Angeles, where he served as principal and president; at SI as president from 2006-2012; and finally at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles where he was the Director of the Center for Catholic Education before becoming Chancellor. During his tenure as SI’s president, Fr. Walsh redefined the role and structure of the governing board to ensure SI’s continued excellence and raised funds to meet the growing need for tuition assistance. Under his leadership, SI successfully completed the Genesis V campaign, first begun by his predecessor, Anthony P. Sauer, S.J., adding much-needed new buildings to the campus and acquiring the 8.5-acre Fairmont Field a state of-the-art facility in Pacifica used for field hockey, soccer, baseball and softball. He completed construction of the Columbus Piazza, the Doris Duke Wall Choral Room, the Gibbons Hall of Music and so much more at SI. He also renovated the kitchen facility in the Carlin Commons and the Orradre Courtyard as well as the press box and bleachers at J.B. Murphy Field. He also gave his support to the school’s Adult Ministry Program, ensuring that SI’s faculty, staff and leadership will continue to be Ignatian and grow in their spirituality even as the number of Jesuits at SI declines. We all need to understand Jesuit educational goals, Ignatian charism and our Catholic nature, he noted. If we are not dedicated to living out our Jesuit heritage and to being a Catholic Heritage Society school, then we are missing the boat. During the last recession, he also raised money to provide tuition assistance and build the school’s endowment. Despite all these accomplishments, he cherished first and foremost his role as a priest at SI. When I became president, I endeavored to be priest and pastor, educator and administrator, but being a priestly president was most important. Once large gatherings are allowed, we will hold a memorial service for Fr. Walsh in Orradre Chapel on SI's campus. Please keep Robert, his mother Maryjane (Jim '40 dec.) and brothers Jim '67 (Diane), Paul '74 (Barbara), and Greg '75 (Mary) in your prayers. May Robert rest in peace.

Today the San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved the installation of permanent field lights to be built on J.B. Murphy Field on the SI campus. The Wildcats will be practicing and playing under the most state of the art lights in The City in 2021. This especially benefits our six soccer programs during the winter months when sunlight is limited for practices and games. Friday Night Lights for SI football will also become a reality after over 50 years in the Sunset. And our state and nationally ranked lacrosse teams will also benefit from practicing and playing games under the lights. Thank you to our SI community of student-athletes, coaches, alumni, parents, and families for your tireless support helping make dreams come true for our students and for future memories about to happen under the lights. #WeAreSI #AMDG #JesuitEducated

Today, 165 years ago Fr. Anthony Maraschi, S.J. opened the doors to St. Ignatius on October 15, 1855 to its first students. The school building was in what was then the outskirts of San Francisco, in a place known as St. Anne's Valley one of the many valleys created by the huge sand hills that made up what is now downtown San Francisco. The school was located on what is presently the site of Bloomingdale's on Market Street between Fourth and Fifth streets. Happy Founding Day everyone!
