Walter is 30 years old and is sitting in an ICE detention center where he’s been held for the last 3.5 years despite winning his case before the immigration court twice. Each time he has won, DHS has appealed and he has remained in custody. Walter’s story highlights the lack of due process protections in deportation proceedings as well as severe government neglect and misconduct. ICE is attempting to deport Walter due to convictions (including from over 10 years ago) for whi...ch he has fully served his sentences. Ironically, the longest period Walter has ever served in jail on any criminal conviction is 6 months but Walter has now been in immigration custody for 6.5 times longer than that period of time. If released, Walter would immediately check into the 6 month alcohol recovery program that he has been admitted to in order to address his alcohol dependency. Walter has courageously shared his story as a survivor of sexual assault and the impact it has made on his mental health, pushing him to resort to alcohol as a coping mechanism. Walter’s continued detention is inhumane. He deserves to be released so that he can get the community services he deserves and make his way home to his family! #100DaysforFreedom

The Immigrants’ Rights team at Centro Legal has advocated tirelessly for the abolition of detention centers and jails across the state, taking direction from community members personally impacted by detention and incarceration. This week, detained community members and advocates joined the #Somos15 campaign to raise awareness to the fifteen undocumented immigrants who are still being held in the immigration wards of Yuba County Jail, and who bravely speak out against the injustices they face there. No one got us the way our community got us. Check out our chat with Centro’s immigration paralegal, Deyci Carrillo Lopez, to learn about our bold advocacy efforts to #FreeThemAll! When local government leaders stand up for immigrant communities, it offers a necessary and powerful counter-narrative to the federal government’s relentless anti-immigrant policies and dangerous, divisive rhetoric. If we wish to truly live our values as Americans, we must encourage all local leaders to get behind the growing movement for universal representation to help to ensure that due process is a right for all, not just a privilege for some.
