Attention rockfish anglers, we have news for you! Several changes to the state’s recreational groundfish regulations will take effect on Jan. 1. Most notably,... black rockfish, canary rockfish, and cabezon no longer have sub-bag limits within the 10-fish rockfish, cabezon, greenling (RCG) complex daily bag limit. Anglers need to be aware there is a new sub-bag limit of five vermilion rockfish. Also, the Rockfish Conservation Area (RCA) boundary will increase in depth in three different management areas (Mendocino, San Francisco, and Southern). For more detailed information on the new 2021 recreational groundfish regulations, call the Recreational Groundfish Hotline at (831) 649-2801 or visit https://wildlife.ca.gov//oc/regulations/groundfish-summary The legal method of take for California scorpionfish is now no more than two hooks and one line. And the ‘all depth’ fishery in the Northern and Mendocino management areas will continue each November and December, unless modified by an in-season action. Many of the regulation changes were made in response to the outcomes of recent stock assessment science that showed certain groundfish populations are rebounding. As a reminder, these changes are not reflected in the 2020-21 ocean sport fishing regulations book that is already in print.
