Happy #fiercefemalefriday! In honor of #blackhistorymonth we are highlighting Madam Vice President, Kamala Harris, the first Black woman elected to serve in the White House. Kamala has been the first in many stages of her life and career. Growing up in Oakland (oh hey East Bay!), Kamala attended Thousand Oaks Elementary and was one of the first classes of students who participated in the city’s busing integration program to desegregate schools. As her mother, Shyamala Har...ris, always told her, You may be the first. Don’t be the last. Kamala applied that advice throughout her life when she became SF’s first female district attorney, California’s first female and first African American or Indian American Attorney General, and later our state’s first African American and Indian American senator. She regularly mentored female leaders to live into her mother’s mantra. Last month, she became the first again, only this time, as the first female, first Black and first Indian American Vice President. And she vows she won’t be the last woman in the White House. From an equity and representation standpoint, we are excited to see Kamala pioneer pathways for more women of color to run for office. #ladieswholead #sfspinsters #fiercefemalefriday #spinnieSIP See more

Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as our nation faces our shared legacy of systemic racism and injustice. As Spinsters, we are inspired by Dr. King's dedication to serve his community and advocate for racial justice and equity. To celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and so many other Black leaders who continue to fight for justice, here is a list of ways we can celebrate MLK day today. 1. Check out this @nytimes list below for virtual events to tune into and nonpro...fits to donate to today. 2. Read up on Mahalia Jackson, the Queen of Gospel, who worked closely with Dr. King and helped inspire his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. 3. Consider donating to Black-led local nonprofits such as @cwempowers (Courageous Women Association) or @sfachievers (San Francisco Achievers) Comment with other suggestions below! 4. Stream a film to commemorate Dr. King's legacy. In addition to acclaimed films about Dr. King like Selma, our other favorites highlight the leadership of Black women who fought for racial justice including, All In: The Fight for Democracy featuring Stacey Abrams, The Rosa Parks Story, and Harriet. 5. While you're watching, enjoy takeout from a black-owned business! Check out the link to a list of Black-owned Bay Area restaurants at the end of this post. Happy 92nd birthday, Dr. King. Thank you for calling on us all to love, to dream, and to be in service to each other. #restinpower #mlkday2021 #sfspinsters https://www.nytimes.com//how-to-celebrate-martin-luther-ki https://www.vox.com//martin-luther-king-dream-mahalia-jack https://docs.google.com//1mTthE5lwqVnTCIm3iQtQXL/htmlview See more

Happy New Year, Spinnies . We’re starting 2021 with our first #FierceFemaleFriday of the year with Rasbperries! Comedienne, Carol Channing. She was one of Bay Area’s brightest stars. After moving to the Bay Area from Seattle, Channing attended Aptos Junior High School and Lowell High School in San Francisco. Shortly after graduating high school in 1983, she attended Bennington College in Vermont before pursuing a tremendous career on Broadway. Her love of music and film... stemmed from the live theater scene she loved in San Francisco. To this day, she still remains as one of the most beloved comedic actresses of all time. Let’s channel Carol Channing’s spirit, gear up for Awards Season (63rd Annual Grammy Awards Season end of January), and head into the new year with a new mindset and attitude #LadiesWhoLead #sfspinsters #SpinnieSIP #SociallyDistantSpinnies

Today’s #fiercefemalefriday is in honor of the great literary luminary and civil rights activist, Dr. Maya Angelou. Did you know that at just 16 years old, Angelou became one of the first African American street car operators in San Francisco? She loved the uniform and wanted to get to know people in the city as a newcomer from Arkansas. In 1944, the Market Street Railway Co. initially denied her an application because she was Black. But she persisted in the face of... racism. For two weeks she went to the office every day until they finally gave her the job. She often worked on the Haight Street line which ran from Ocean Beach to the Ferry Building. Angelou paved the way for more people of color (esp. women!) to find careers in the transit industry as well as literature and social activism. We salute you, Dr. Maya Angelou, for standing up to racism, sexism, and discrimination in our city by the bay. (Streetcar photo does not picture Angelou but it shows how more female streetcar conductors of color were hired after Angelou’s breakthrough tenure.) #ladieswholead #sfspinsters #SpinnieSIP See more

We are in awe of how our nonprofit partner, La Cocina has mobilized relief funds to support talented local chefs of color from low-income and immigrant communities through the economic downturn of the pandemic. The La Cocina Emergency Relief Fund provides monthly financial assistance with no strings attached so small business owners can support their businesses and their families. Participants say it is "the most straightforward relief" to keep going during this challenging time. We can't wait for our next chance to fundraise for La Cocina at their upcoming Voices from the Kitchen event on October 29th. Happy Fierce Female Friday, Spinnies! In honor of Filipino American Heritage Month, we celebrate local diving legend, Victoria Manalo Draves, the first Asian American to win an Olympic gold medal. Victoria (nicknamed Vicki) grew up in SOMA and took swimming lessons in the Mission. In the 1940s, public pools in SF didn't allow people of color to swim except for one day a month, and many of the pools in the area charged lesson fees that Vicki's family couldn't afford. Despite t...hese inequitable barriers, Vicki persisted in perfecting her diving form and competed on the US Diving Team at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. She won gold medals for both the ten-meter platform and the three-meter springboard. Her legacy lives on today in SOMA at Victoria Manalo Draves Park. Fridays don't get much fiercer than this! Thank you @awhellnaw_karen for the recommendation! #ladieswholead #fiercefemalefriday See more

We are thrilled to announce that together Spinsters made a record-breaking donation to our incredible no profit partner @lacocinasf of $54,856! The donation is a culmination of all of Spinsters’ fundraising and solicited donations from the past year. We are honored to be able to support La Cocina’s critical work to solve problems of equity in business ownership for women, immigrants, and people of color who make the Bay Area food industry vibrant and delicious. Their work is... essential as talented small business owners fight to stay open, support their families, and feed our community throughout the pandemic. Let’s unite this year to beat our fundraising record again! Your first chance to help fund raise is to buy a ticket to our upcoming virtual Fleet or Flight party with food flights, wine, and a DJ dance party next Friday, October 9th. Don’t miss your chance to support locally by fundraising for La Cocina with Spinsters of San Francisco! #sfspinsters #sociallydistantspinnies #spinnieSIP #lacocinasf https://www.eventbrite.com/e/spinsters-of-san-francisco-pre
