A beauty from Melissa Leuschel of Stained Glass Love Happy Sunday Y'all! #stainedglassart
Our new friend Codi of Sunny Salmon Works, winner of our giveaway in December, decided to use her giveaway glass for good! She passed on the kindness to her beloved kombucha go-to 203 Kombucha in the form of a beautiful piece to hang outside their shop! It’s been extremely tough for our retailer friends and restaurants peeps so it is so encouraging to see people go out of the way to support them. We hope to do another giveaway in spring and it would blow us away if the same spirit of giving was continued We can all do this together! Hang in their folks, the light is coming

When we asked James what his works was mainly about and where he draws his inspiration from he told us, I mostly make artwork for the market and sometimes I ge...t to make artwork for myself, from and for my own soul. As a generalist in the glass art trades, I create work based on my customer’s requirements. For that reason, I have to be able to work in all of the major art glass formats, hot, warm, cold and metal forming. But when I get the opportunity to work from my heart, I try to make art that speaks to the fragile state of the environment and how man is affecting destructive and permanent changes to our shared Mother Earth, with a focus on our precious oceans. . James gave us the inside scoop on some of his favorite pieces he has done. Some of my personal favorite art pieces include Not Seen, Not Heard but Felt, a 16-foot outdoor sculpture that started its’ life as a temporary San Diego Unified Port District Urban Tree installation and is now permanently installed at the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific. Another one of my favorite projects was Last Call Before We Eat Them All, a glass and aluminum sea life art bench. That was produced in a limited-edition series of three. One was sold to a patron in Solana Beach, one to a patron in Beverly Hills and the last one in the series is in our gallery in Escondido, waiting for its’ forever permanent home. I enjoy mixing materials like glass and metal. I recently completed a wall sculpture called Dead Sea Scroll. This piece combines glass, aluminum and copper to depict the most endangered sea life in all of our seven oceans and who or what is responsible for their demise. . He remarked, The other project that always makes me smile is Earth Echo which was my very first museum acquisition. This gorgeous wall piece started its’ life as a fundraising donation to the Zimmer Museum in Beverly Hills. The piece was ultimately sold at auction to a film producer in Hollywood! . . #artglassfinest #glassart #glassfam #glassblowing #installation #coe96 #spectrum #oceansidecompatible #saveourseas #deadseascrolls #museumart #sandiegoartist #glassartist #glasswork See more
Introducing James Stone, @stoneandglasssd our newest #ArtGlassFinest, who happened to find his way to glass, like many of his generation, late in his journey. James grew up on a farm in rural Northern New Jersey. Even though both his parents were working engineers, they ran a 110-acre chicken and sheep farm inside what is now the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. When we asked him about how that influenced his journey he said Being raise in a very Tom Sawyer environment... on the Passaic River influenced my entire life. I started creating art before I was even a teenager. As a child I mostly sketched fish and wildlife from the swamp. Before I was even in high school, I was making jewelry. Being raised on a farm, I became proficient with a wide variety of hand tools at an early age. I always practiced some form of creating all through school and finally ended up with a Fine Arts degree. After college I went on to become a prop maker for stage, motion picture and television. In 1975 I opened a small stained-glass studio in Las Vegas. In a short time, I had to move into a large facility as I was building windows and lighting for restaurants, hotels and casinos. I did one project for the Sahara Space center that was 14,000 square feet. It was in Las Vegas that quite by accident I happened to discover glassblowing. But it took another 12 years before I actually got the opportunity to learn how to blow glass, right here in San Diego. We asked James how he got started, and he said it happened in 1974 while a graduate student at UNLV. James joked, I was so broke that I could not afford to pay for gasoline for my VW. Lucky for him there was a stained-glass shop across the street from his apartment. He noticed that they were throwing out buckets of scrap. They were more than willing to let him take the scrap for free. He started by making Tiffany style belt buckles. He was so successful selling his art that when he got thrown out of graduate school without completing his degree, he was able to seamlessly make the jump to creating a line of stained-glass wearable art. It wasn’t until 12 years later that he made the leap into glassblowing! #glassblowing : Time : ASHUTOSH

It’s about that time again for our favorite monthly feature #ArtGlassFinest! We would like to introduce you to Jennifer Kuhns (@jkmosaic) Jennifer is a glass artist and teacher who’s main focus and passion is commission-based architectural mosaic, integrated into homes, businesses and public places. When we asked her about her work she said I work in two distinct styles. One is very stylized, colorful and inspired by folk art. The other is representational, using off-cuts to... compose dimensional images, both portraits and landscapes. In either style, I generally fabricate the mosaic on mesh or tile board in my studio in sections, then install them, or have them installed, in the final location, which can be in another state. I have work installed all over the U.S. (and one in Banff, Canada.)! She started working in mosaic in 2000, and discovered stained glass in 2001. For years, she salvaged her glass from stained and fused glass studios, so she used whatever she could get. Later, Jennifer became acquainted with the Spectrum Glass factory, which was 2 hours north of her home in remote Southwest Washington. At that time she started working with at-risk teens and took them on several tours of the factory, and Spectrum donated glass to her mosaic program! Like many others, Jennifer was crushed when Spectrum closed its doors but was extremely relieved when she found out we had acquired the business. Stay tuned for more about Jenn!
Remember Janine, our #ArtGlassFinest Spotlight? She's having another zoom class this Saturday for those of you interested in learning more about what you can do with glass! In this virtual class, you will design fused glass pieces by stacking different shapes to create geometric or floral looking glass creations. Janine will discuss color selection, shape cutting techniques and size differences that are most successful to create the desired effect. This class is good for be...ginners as well as more seasoned glass hobbyists. Tools that are used to make the glass cutting process easier will be demonstrated and fired pieces showing the effects of full fusing the stacked pieces will be featured and discussed. Once the discussion is complete, you will begin a project of their choice with Janine's guidance and you will finish out the time creating together. Sign up today before her class fills up! July 11th, 9:30 a.m to 12:00 p.m. http://www.designsbyja9.com/Stack-Attack-Virtual-via-Zoom-7
