Ride of the week: Downieville (Part 2) Miles: 15+ Difficulty: Advanced Elevation Gain: 500’-2000’ Time: 2-3.5 hours... This week we feature part 2 of one of my favorite places to mountain bike in the world, DOWNIEVILLE! If you have any time this Fall make it happen and get there and if not plan a trip next year. Either way, just say YES and make it happen; you won’t be disappointed. It can get pretty busy in the summer so make sure you reserve your shuttles in advance with @downievilleoutfitters. This year we rode a five (5) shuttles with an awesome variety of trails. Most people that ride Downieville tend to stick to the Classic (Sunrise to Butcher Ranch to Third Divide to Second Divide) and I definitely enjoy this ride but I also like to climb which is no secret. If you want to add some climbing to the mix check out the Gold Valley Rim Trail (a new trail from a few years back that was formerly part of the PCT) and from there you can head down Pauley Creek or head up to Big Boulder (which will add another 30-45 minutes of climbing). If you want to skip Gold Valley you can head down Sunrise and then take the Pauley Creek Road (Gold Valley OHV Trail) there instead which will cut off some time and elevation gain. Big Boulder and Pauley Creek are definitely my favorite rides at Downieville and offer a good variety of terrain and you end up at one of my favorite sections, the Third Divide where you can SEND IT! Please remember that all of the trails in Downieville are OHV (multi-use) trails and primarily funded by the CA Green Sticker Program so be respectful of the dirtbikers out there. Everyone has a right to use the trails. Ride of the week: Downieville (Part 1) Miles: 15+ Difficulty: Advanced Elevation Gain: 500’-2000’ Time: 2-3.5 hours... It’s the annual 4-day camping trip to the mecca of mountain biking, DOWNIEVILLE! This is my favorite trip of the year and many people in our crew have been going for 15+ years (only about 7+ for me). If you have never been stop everything you’re doing and plan a trip right now (yes, it’s that good). Our trip pretty much consists of wake up, ride bikes, swim in Yuba River, camp, repeat, repeat, repeat. The town of Downieville (population 325) itself is really cool and was popular during the gold rush but after the economy in the town suffered so some locals brought in mountain biking to help save the day. There is no cell phone coverage in or around the area so if you need to be connected there are a few hot spots in town but it’s always nice to escape the grid/matrix for a few days and shut your brain off. We usually do between 1-2 shuttles per day and use @downievilleoutfitters (ask for the owner, Greg). The shuttle times vary depending on the season but usually start at 9am and the last shuttle is typically 3pm. It's a 45 minute shuttle ride to the top of Packer Saddle and from there sky is the limit.
