Irene Sawyer was an artist, art historian, and educator, who played a key role in developing the field of African American art history. Like other Black women art historians and archivists of the 1970s and 1980s, Sawyer recognized the critical role that comprehensive archival databases of work by Black artists would have for future students and researchers of the field. She worked over the course of her career to create these archival databases, and to develop the exhibitions..., texts, and educational resources that they made possible. Sawyer developed a collection of 4,300 unique slides, along with transcribed interviews with artists, artist biographies, and an annotated bibliography which is held in the archives of the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology at UC Berkeley. Learn more about Irene Sawyer at http://ow.ly/99dc50DpjXl #BlackHistoryMonth #ArtHistory #Anthropology #Art #Archival #BlackHistory

"Our vision for the Museum is to become a hub for discovery where learners of all ages and backgrounds can connect with one another to explore, innovate, and share ideas. The pandemic, a global movement for social justice and anti-racist action, and a devastating wildfire season have inspired us to reflect on how we can learn from our past to create a more inclusive future. In building a community of belonging, we want everyone to feel welcome at the Hearst Museum, whether experiencing the Museum online, in our gallery, or while researching our vast collection." - Caroline Fernald, Hearst Museum Executive Director Read the full letter from the Director at https://hearstmuseum.berkeley.edu/light-the-way/
