"yoga is the process of constant evolution toward yourself." Our class theme this week is the 4th Niyama: Svadhyaya (self-study). Knowledge of yourself. Svadhyaya on the mat: Physical cues teachers give in class is a great way to observe how your body parts feel and react to certain directions. It's so important to know Asanas/poses are stepping stones. ... . How does your yoga practice translate into the life off the mat? How you treat yourself as you are moving through the postures, how you react to difficult poses, does translate into how you treat yourself and the world around you off the mat. . Svadhyaya has a lot of do with how you are thinking while you are physically practicing. Are you practicing while on the mat( & in life) complaining? Are you practicing on the mat and off the mat as an eternal optimist seeing the benefits even in difficult poses? When you physically transition into Asanas, let there be room for energy to run through your muscles by relaxing any tense muscles. In order to relax, we need to first observe and see where the tension is. Directing your mind to check in and observe yourself is Svadhyaya. . when life presents you with difficult moments, starting with the mat. When you are able to catch yourself, notice what is the body, mind & spiritual reaction to these difficult moments are. If the poses are so easy, notice how your mind is commenting to this. Difficult or easy, know these are just moments. Studying yourself in these moments Is the practice of Svadhyaya. . . . . What does it mean to purity your environment? . If we start small, What’s one thing you can do to purify your speech just for one day? Or how can you purify your body just for one day? Our practice this week! The third Niyama, ‘Tapas’, which often translates traditionally as ‘austerity’ or ‘discipline’. The word Tapas is derived from the root Sanskrit verb ‘tap’ which means ‘to burn’, and evokes a sense of ‘fiery discipline’ or ‘passion’. In this sense, Tapas can mean cultivating a sense of self-discipline, passion and courage in order to burn away ‘impurities’ physically, mentally and emotionally, and paving the way to our true greatness.... . Tapas on the mat: First of all, ‘discipline’ doesn’t strictly mean pushing ourselves harder in a physical sense. For some, Tapas will mean making time to be still and observing the mind, and for others, it’ll mean working on strength and practising that arm balance we’ve been putting off. . . . Brahmacharya is the 4th Yama we’re practicing in our classes. It translate to ‘right use of energy’ leading us to consider how we actually use and direct our energy. Brahmacharya also evokes a sense of directing our energy away from external desires you know, those pleasures which seem great at the time but are ultimately fleeting and instead, towards finding peace and happiness within ourselves. . During this holiday week, as we practice Brahmacharya in our yoga class...es, we get to practice and build the mindfulness toward the right use of energy, implement moderation and practice self restraint. . Asteya (non stealing) is the practice in our classes this week! We practice this on the yoga mat with ourselves to take the practice outside of the mat. . Here’s one way to practice Asteya on the mat: Do you push yourself beyond healthy boundaries in your practice because you’re afraid of not beinggood enough? Even subconsciously, there’s usually a little part of us that starts out with the best of intentions, but then about half-way through class, begins to tempt us towar...ds practising for the way a posture ‘should’ look, instead of how it feels. . When we continually focus on pushing ourselves just a little too far over that ‘edge’ in order to attain a posture, we not only rob ourselves of a sustainable and natural practice, but we rob ourselves of being able to be present with the posture and with ourselves for exactly the way things are in that moment. . Or do you purposely hold back for some reason? . If we allow ourselves to be open and accepting to exactly how our practice is at that moment on the mat, we never need to feel as though we’re losing out if some asanas are a little out of reach at the moment. It is never the postures we are able to do that define our practice, but the amount of awareness we bring to them. . . .
