Ford v Ferrari v Porsche. The #SonomaSpeedFestival brings racing legends together on and off the track.
This is the 1939 Mercedes-Benz W154 "Silver Arrow". The W154 was created as a result of a rule change by the sports governing body AIACR, which required supercharged engine capacities to be limited to 3000cc. Mercedes’ previous car, the W125 used a 5700cc engine and was therefore ineligible to be entered. Mercedes decided that a new car, designed from the outset to comply with the new regulations would be preferable to modifying the existing car and thus designed the W154. Photo: @canepamotorsport

The McLaren F1 was never intended to race, but after pressure from customers, F1 designer Gordon Murray reluctantly built a handful of race versions of the car known as the GTR. After an astonishing overall victory at Le Mans the program evolved, eventually leading to the development of the Long Tail GTR, like this one, at last years Sonoma Speed Festival. Photography provided by the late, great Victor Varela.

The beautiful Jaguar XK120 was in the running at the inaugural #SonomaSpeedFestival. Beginning in 1948, the first 242 cars wore wood-framed open 2-seater bodies with aluminum panels. Production switched to all-steel in early 1950. The "120" in the name referred to the aluminum car's 120mph top speed (faster with the windscreen removed), which made it the world's fastest production car at the time of its launch. The Mercedes W196 is one of the most significant F1 cars in history. In total the "Type Monza" won three races, the 1954 French Grand Prix and the 1954/1955 Italian Grand Prix. These three Grand Prix have remained the only races won by a closed-wheel car in F1 history.
This is the 1934 ERA B-Type. ERA was founded in November 1933 and established in Bourne, Lincolnshire. Their ambition was to manufacture and campaign a team of single seater racing cars capable of upholding British prestige in Continental European racing. In 1935, production of the B-Type began. 13 B-Type ERAs were produced, three of which were later modified to subsequent (type C or in one case type D) specifications. The B type was practically the same as the A version, just with the benefit of time to help ensure the car's reliability. The fact the B was produced in 1935 was the only real difference between it and the A. The B would go on to score some impressive wins and finishes and would be sought after by many individual racers.
