As residential solar installations on single-family homes have soared over the last 10 years, most multifamily dwellers are still unable to access energy powered by the sun. In California, virtual net metering (NEM-V) allow solar to be installed on multifamily building rooftops and for the benefits to be allocated between tenants and common area accounts via electricity bill credits. In jurisdictions with rent control, however, limitations on how much a landlord may increase tenants' rents can present a barrier to multifamily solar uptake.
