Throughout Kitty’s life, we noticed that she was a bit different from her other peers who have Down syndrome. She's a bit on the anti-social side. Speaks repet...itively. Has stimming behavior almost constantly. We chalked it up to that dreaded term that no one likes to hear or use, "low functioning." One day, we happened to be hanging out with a family friend who is a nurse who has knowledge about different disabilities. Suddenly it was like a lightbulb went off in my head. I turned to my friend and asked, "Do you think Kitty has Autism?" Without delaying a second she responded, "Yes." I was taken aback. I honestly blurted out the question without really thinking about it, so I had not braced for that answer. Receiving a dual diagnosis is overwhelming, at first. Until you realize that this new label does not fundamentally change anything about your child. They are still exactly who they were before receiving this new diagnosis, and you have been caring for them and doing exactly what needed to be done before you were aware. Not much changes. Your child is still your child. It's just that now you can have a better understanding and better tools with which to help them. When Covid-19 hit and school went virtual, the teacher started emailing recipes for us to cook with Kitty at home. We began filming her cooking to send back to her teachers to prove she was doing her work. Quite a few of our friends and family urged us to "go pro" and give Kitty her own YouTube channel. And suddenly, Cooking With Kitty was born. Kitty and her dad Dan, and sometimes special guest stars, cook a variety of different foods. From deep dish pizza, to chicken biryani, to dog treats for her sister's dog Chewie, to a rainbow Pride cake with her Uncles....Kitty cooks it all. Her most recent project was teaming up with a local donut shop where they collaborated to make the Kitty Donut. A milk and honey donut, using honey from another local business, complete with blue and yellow icing for Down Syndrome awareness. Proceeds from the sales of that donut will go to DSAW, the Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin throughout the month of October. We're not quite sure where this journey will take us, but we know that Kitty is absolutely amazing, fills us with immense pride and is perfect just the way she is. We are so blessed to have her in our lives. You can find Cooking With Kitty on YouTube with new episodes every week. She is also on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. #MyStoryMonday #ndsscommunity
