Today we’d like to share what Ashley Clark, our Senior Payroll Manager had to say about Black History Month. For me and my family, Black History Month is about doing our part in redefining the narrative of living as a Black American in today’s society. We celebrate and recognize the sacrifices, contributions, and achie...vements of Black Americans but it can’t stop there. Black History Month must drive us to look inwardly at our own biases and judgements. It must cause us to question our thought processes and actions so we can focus on creating true equity and justice for all. Black History Month is about sharing our faith with others by showing love in the face of hatred...and finding hope in times of despair. Treating others with decency and dignity should never be up for debate. Black History Month is about looking at the past, not just for the struggle, but for the perseverance. Taking hold of our faith, our triumphs, our tears, and our determination to show the world today that Black Lives HAVE to matter. Watching the 2021 inauguration with so many powerful women of color at the forefront tells me we are making progress! It tells me that the work of our predecessors and the work we are all doing together is creating avenues of opportunity for Black Americans. But there is still so much work to be done. I shouldn’t feel fear every time my husband goes for a jog alone, but I do. I shouldn’t have to explain to my 10 year old son why he can’t wear his hoodie like his non-Black friends, but I do. Together, we CAN continue to reshape the Black American experience if we do not allow Black History Month to mean nothing.... Black History Month will mean nothing if we don’t learn from the past; we have to move forward with positive change. Everyone has a part to play whether it is educating ourselves, listening to another’s perspective, choosing empathy, or speaking up against bias. Silence and inaction is a choice to continue oppression so we all must use our voices, no matter how small. See more

Black History Month for me is a time to reflect on what great accomplishments African Americans have made not just in the U.S. but the world. Remembering the sacrifices and accomplishments of not just the more prominent figures like Harriet Tubman, Robert Smalls and Martin Luther King Jr. but remembering our local school teachers, coaches and church leaders. Without the help of God and the heroes in my community, I wouldn’t be where I am today. So I stand on their shoulders and it’s my responsibility to make sure I hold the ladder to help someone else
