Slim's Eat-A-Burger

Posted 9/7/2016 Kirk Lauby - Slim's was a regular stop for my family back in the 40's, 50's, 60's 70's. I was born in 49. My dad knew Slim from the time it opened. Slim used to work the grill. We always sat at the counter. My dad went to Slims from the time it opened in Van Nuys where my dad grew up and graduated from VNHS in 1945. I remember one time when everyone had been served their burger and Slim still had one on the grill. He asked everyone to check the bun and see if ...they were missing a patty. One of our group was. He was a character. Last time I was there was after I had kids of my own. As i recall, it was somewhere on the same block or a block away from the old bowling alley, where my dad used to set pins as a kid before the advent of the automatic pin setter. I would ride my bike from our house near Sherman Way and Hazeltine and go bowling and then go over to pick up a hamburger at Slims when I was about 10-12 and had a bit of freedom.

Posted 9/7/2016 John Phillips - You are the only person I've ever seen post something about, or mention, Slims. I lived in the Valley from '59 to '91. Knew Slim and Alice well. My U.S.M.C. recruiter took me there for lunch in 1967. He told Slim, " This guy's hungry. Whatcha got?" From then on Slim called me "Hungry". As in "Hello Hungry. What'll you have?"
