This week's GenEC Rec is to learn more about Transgender Day of Remembrance. Today's observance began after a vigil for Rita Hester, a Boston LGBTQ+ community member, who was a local educator around trans issues. cw: murder This year alone, 34 trans or gender non-conforming people have been murdered in the US. But this number is most likely higher due to misgendering by local police and media reports. Majority of victims were Black trans women who faced racism, homophobia, ...and transphobia. Today we take a moment of silence for the lives lost this year. It's important that we educate ourselves around issues the trans community endures and how to best support them. Here are some organizations and resources that support and advocate for the trans community. @tgijustice @translawcenter @translifeline @antiviolence @sylviariveralawproject You can find this article link and our previous GenEC Recs from this semester in our bio. #transgenderdayofremembrance #transgenderawarenessweek #blacktranslivesmatter #listentotranspeople #supporttranspeople
