Nov 11 Happy Veterans Day . . . and Blessed Memorial of St. Martin of Tours. THANK YOU TO VETERANS OF OUR USA ARMED FORCES FOR YOUR SERVICE! Today we salute and honor military veterans who have served in our nation's Armed Forces. The holiday began as a way to mark the anniversary of the armistice ending World War I, and was originally designated Armistice Day by President Woodrow Wilson to honor those who served in that war. ... In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks had the idea to expand Armistice Day to honor ALL veterans, and he conducted the first Veterans Day celebration in 1945. Congressman Ed Rees presented a bill in Congress in 1954 to establish the day as a holiday, and it was signed into law by President Dwight Eisenhower. A few weeks later Congress amended the bill replacing Armistice with Veterans. BLESSED MEMORIAL OF ST. MARTIN OF TOURS, BISHOP. Born in 316 in Sabaria (now in Hungary) Martin’s father, a Roman general, brought him up as a pagan destined to be a soldier. Martin served in Gaul, Milan, and Treves. As a young soldier Martin was drawn to Christianity. One day he encountered an unclothed beggar. Martin removed his cloak, cut it and gave one half to the beggar. That night he saw Our Lord in a vision wrapped in one-half of his cloak and surrounded by angels to whom He said: Martin, yet a catechumen, hath clothed Me with this garment. Martin’s life was marked by many miracles and apostolic zeal. In 371, the people of Tours called on Martin to be their bishop. Even though he didn’t want the office, he was ordained and became a holy and hardworking Bishop. He labored to root out paganism in his diocese and to establish ideals monastic life. In 397, after his death, a biography written by Sulpicius Severus became a kind of gospel of the monastic life. Thousands of churches have been dedicated to Martin. St. Benedict dedicated the church of his Order on Monte Cassino to his honor. St. Martin of Tours, pray for us! www.sjboc.org

Nov 10 Blessed Memorial of Pope St. Leo the Great! Nothing is known with certainty of Leo’s early life. He was ordained and rose to prominence as a papal advisor in the 420s. He corresponded with theologians and was a papal emissary before he was elected Bishop of Rome in 440. Leo expanded the power and influence of the papacy. The Church’s theological tradition rooted Rome’s primacy in the martyrdom of Sts Peter & Paul in the eternal city. Leo emphasized that the pope’s au...thority is even more rooted on the fact that the Bishop of Rome occupies the Chair of St Peter. Leo taught, in word and action, that the pope’s power was unequaled and that the pope is head of the world’s bishops. Leo’s authority was exercised clearly at the Council of Chalcedon in 451. The issue at stake concerned Christ’s divinity. Some theologians espoused the Monophysite heresy, which argued that Christ had only one divine nature. The Council consisted of 600 bishops from the Eastern Roman Empire, with a handful from Africa. Leo sent 3 legates who were treated with honor and respect. They read to the Council Fathers the Tome of Leo on the Incarnation. The pope’s words laid out, with force, clarity, and eloquence, that Jesus Christ had both a divine and a human nature without confusion or admixture. The bishops’ common response was This is the faith of the fathers; this is the faith of the apostlesLet anyone who believes otherwise be anathema. Peter has spoken through the mouth of Leo. In 452 Pope Leo met Attila the Hun, convincing him not to sack Rome. Pope Leo was courageous in alleviating poverty, protecting Rome from invaders, and maintaining Rome’s Christian heritage, but is most known for the depth and clarity of his sermons and letters, for which he was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1754. Leo was the first pope, after Peter, buried in St Peter’s Basilica, under a marble sculpture of his famous meeting with Attila. Pope St. Leo the Great, pray for us! www.sjboc.org

Nov 9 Joyful Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica! Today the Church celebrates the dedication of the Lateran Basilica. It is the oldest and highest ranking of the basilicas in Rome, and is the cathedral of the diocese of Rome-- the cathedra (seat) of the Supreme Pontiff, the Pope, who is the Bishop of Rome. Constantine gave Pope Miltiades the palace of the Laterani family, and the basilica, baptistery, and residence where Popes lived until the Avignon period ...were built. The basilica was dedicated by Pope Sylvester c.324 and named Most Holy Savior. After the 6th century the names of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist were added. In this basilica and the Lateran Palace 5 ecumenical councils and 20 synods were held. Beneath its high altar rest the remains of the small wooden table on which tradition holds St Peter himself celebrated Mass. In 1565, the feast became a universal celebration in honor of "the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world" (omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput), as a sign of love for and union with the See of Peter. Honoring of this basilica is a way of expressing veneration for the Roman Church, which, as St. Ignatius of Antioch says, presides in charity over the whole Catholic communion. Pope Benedict XVI, in an Address in 2008, stated: Dear friends, today’s feast celebrates a mystery that is always relevant: God’s desire to build a spiritual temple in the world, a community that worships him in spirit and truth (cf. John 4:23-24). But this observance also reminds us of the importance of the material buildings in which the community gathers to celebrate the praises of God. Every community therefore has the duty to take special care of its own sacred buildings, which are a precious religious and historical patrimony. For this we call upon the intercession of Mary Most Holy, that she help us to become, like her, the house of God, living temple of His love. www.sjboc.org
