What an inviting idea! St. Francis Retreat, located on a parcel of the former Rancho San Justo, is "far from the madding crowd" and a true respite for body and soul.
So many buildings in San Juan Bautista have been moved from their original locations to other sites: the IOOF building, the Mariposa House, the old school house at 1111 First Street, the little cottages at Indian Corner, just to name a few. $400,000 though -- perhaps a Condition of Approval to build a new 47-unit apartment complex on the Victorian's former site.

On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed and issued Executive Order 9066. On the anniversary of that day seventy-nine years later, we reflec...t on what the order meant for Japanese Americans and introduce newly digitized collections that tell their stories. February 19: Day of Remembrance
Did you know that nearly one-third of the Anza expedition were of African descent? Afro-Latinos may have joined the expedition to Alta California (San Francisco...) in 1775 in order to subvert the racial caste system that existed in New Spain. Historian Damany Fisher has researched and written about early Black Californios in his excellent publication, Discovering Early California Afro-Latino Presence: unlike the United States, where people of different ethnic and racial backgrounds were largely segregated, early 19th century California was a place where Afro-Latino, Mestizo, European and Indians lived side by side and frequently married. Of course, these relationships were not always harmonious In California Afro-Latinos had greater social economic and political opportunities some acquiring vast tracts of land or serving as military officers or government officials. #blackhistorymonth #History #February #California #AnzaTrail See more
Inaka Japanese Restaurant is located in the nationally-registered Third Street Historic District. Built by Antoine Taix in 1908, the Taix Block at 313 and 315 Third Street was the last stone building constructed in the commercial district after the fire of 1867 (fourth in succession and fourth in sequence of construction of stone buildings between Mariposa and Polk Streets). Thank you, Barbara Schicker Cook, for donating this beautiful California Trails Guide from your late father's collection. Copyright 1952 by California Mission Trails Association, Ltd. Notice that the text describing Mission San Juan Bautista states, "Pottery tile roof, molded on thighs of Indian workmen, thick adobe walls and lovely gardens are maintained as in early days."

The history of the Donner Party is, of course, part of the history of San Juan Bautista. Survivors were early settlers in town, and descendants still reside here. https://www.kqed.org/news/11844011/donner-party-pt-1
Have you visited our historic downtown district lately? Relax, kick back, and savor a slower pace reminiscent of times gone by.
Does this remind you of the good old days? The aroma is enticing as well.
"The painting La Dolorosa, a depiction of of Our Lady of Sorrows on her Feast Day, was unearthed in the main sanctuary of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel."
On October 14, 1943, U.S. Maritime Commission Tanker S.S. Mission San Juan Bautista was launched at Marinship Yards, Sausalito. In the world's first all-female launching, women in war plants all over America were honored. Click each photo for full image.
The Volcanic Tablelands near Bishop, California, are a vast, rugged landscape formed over 700,000 years ago by the Long Valley caldera. In this high desert envi...ronment, generations of Paiute-Shoshone - who still reside in the area - carved an extensive collection of carefully chiseled petroglyphs in the rocks. Now a destination for rock climbers, these fragile treasures are protected by the Bureau of Land Management. Photo by Abhilash Itharaju (www.sharetheexperience.org). See more
