Siskiyou Land Trust 26.12.2020

Beneath the ice and frost of mountain wetlands is a rich and essential wildlife habitat. Life lies dormant in seeds and roots, small animals burrowed in the earth and mud. Winter is a season of silence. Hammond Pond is the conservation property that launched Siskiyou Land Trust back in the 1990’s. The 67 acre pond and marsh is held by SLT in perpetuity for wildlife habitat, wetland and scenic values. These photos were taken by SLT board member Steve Bollock from one of the private roads that circle the reservoir. The only public access to Hammond Pond are the views from Old Stage Road. Even though wetlands look less vibrant in the winter, it’s a great time to appreciate the diversity of life as we await the magic that springtime will bring!

Time to celebrate, Land Trust friends. All the documents have been signed and the paperwork filed - the Bouvier Ranch conservation easement in western Siskiyou County has closed! This 1,596 acre working forest and agricultural property, home to 2.5 miles of the South Fork Scott River, is permanently protected by the conservation easement (CE) that is recorded and will stay with the land in perpetuity.... As the CE created in partnership with Western Rivers Conservancy closed, the sale of the land to a local conservation-minded family was also completed. Now SLT's role shifts to the ongoing work of being in partnership with the landowners and monitoring the property to ensure the protections and conservation values in the CE are upheld...year after year into the future. We're excited and grateful to our partners for the hard work and care that went into this CE that provides for the health and resiliency of this upper watershed of the South Fork Scott River and its critical habitat for the endangered coho salmon and many other species. It's a good day. Celebrate with us. (And get ready, there's more good news coming!)
