Side Street is proud to launch Care Talk, an interactive storytelling project that amplifies the voices of caregivers working on the front-lines of a global pandemic, by artist-in-residence Michael Rippens. Care Talk invites healthcare workers to call the Care Talk hotline number (626) 427-7293, and record personal experiences of living and working during the COVID-19 pandemic. All voice recordings can also be found on the Care Talk official website including resources for c...aregivers and care aides, and videos and articles about the migration of Filipino health workers to the U.S., and how COVID-19 is having a toll on Filipino communities. Rippens project will then culminate with two radio shows in collaboration with DubLab on Sunday, January 10th and January 24th from 12 pm to 1 pm PST. The public is invited to listen to these shows live through Dublab's online radio show that broadcasts through the Dublab website. Dial the hotline number today to share your story and listen to other’s experiences, and tune into Rippens’ radio show with DubLab to gather more insight on the project! In March our formal work quickly came to a pause as the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe and we found ourselves together but separate. We watched the systems break down and fail our constituents. These failures clearly exposed our nation’s racist capitalistic oppressive structures. Despite going formally on pause, the Side Street community continued to work and connect. As waves of activism passed through our communities, our artists found themselves being leader...s in their own networks as everyone looked to support each other on a grassroots level, and dismantle repressive systems. We continued to connect and seek healing through artmaking, collaboration, sharing of skills and creative problem solving. Some painted murals in the park and at local businesses, while others collaborated on mutual aid networks to support some of the most vulnerable in our community. We marched. We shared art supplies, tools, seeds, and fruit from our trees. We sewed masks for each other. All of this work was done through informal economies working to disrupt capitalistic colonial structures that support systematic racism. We hold the essence of the community of artists who are Side Street Projects in these acts of service and collaboration. The community of Side Street Projects, never went on pause. We are here. . . Stay tuned for updates about our two current artist-in-residences and our upcoming Open Call for new artist projects next month!
