In honor of #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, Cristina Morales, a patient at Sharp Memorial Hospital, shares her personal experience. "I first discovered something different in the way my breasts felt after I lost 30 pounds from a workout challenge I joined. I lost fat in my breasts and felt a small lump; I figured it was muscle tissue or something from working out. Fast forward to a few months later, I crashed into a pole at Disneyland and bruised my chest. When I got home, I was... examining the bruise and discovered the tumor on my left breast. There's no advice that anyone could have given me to prepare me for this journey. With that said, I would encourage people to find a reason to survive. Something they love or believe in so much that will help carry them through the tough times and bring a smile to their face when they need it. I was 34 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My daughter was only a year old; I had no other choice but to survive. She was and continues to be my why. After being diagnosed, I immediately changed my story's narrative from one of having cancer to a story of survival. To my fellow cancer survivors: You've always been strong, now everyone else will know it too! There will be times when you feel like you can't get through this journey you can and you will. Sometimes journeys are meant to be shared so that the burden isn’t too heavy to bear. Know that you are not alone. There is a sisterhood of survivors that will help you find the resources to help you along the way." #SharpGoesPink #CristinaConquersCancer

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Gina Grosso, a former patient at Sharp Memorial Hospital, shares her personal experience. "After my mom's diagnosis, I felt my breasts with a different mindset because breast cancer no longer seemed impossible. She was the first in our family to get cancer. I was the second. My advice for women is to understand their breast health. When you are conducting a breast self-exam, know that you're feeling for something different, something... unusual, not necessarily something that feels like cancer. Know your body, be your own baseline. Cancer can make you feel helpless. You have to make choices controlled by a disease scarier than you could have imagined. There is never a time when fear isn't a part of your day-to-day. But under all the fear and unknown, try to keep finding hope, even if you have to make it yourself sometimes." #SharpGoesPink See more

October is #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, and while the pandemic continues to be top of mind, we also know important medical care can't wait. We light the Stephen Birch Healthcare Center tower in pink each year to remind our community about the importance of breast cancer awareness, education and research. Approximately one in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer sometime in their lives. Men are not immune to this disease, either. In 2020, there will be more than 2,600 new breast cancer diagnoses in men. We encourage San Diego to practice breast self-awareness and continue with routine screenings. Screenings can help detect breast cancer in its earliest stages up to two years before a lump can be felt. Learn more http://spr.ly/6183GFQcd.
