The world of design evolves constantly. Design trends come and go, industry practices change and styles see good days and bad; nothing’s ever quite certain (and that’s what we love about it). But if there’s one thing we do know about the design industry, it’s that the future is sustainability. Sustainable home design: New technologies, which seek to make sustainable design easier and more effective than ever before, arrive on the design scene regularly and sustainability is g...etting more and more luxe (for those whose style doesn’t quite read reclaimed, recycled or reused). The most important thing to know about sustainable architecture is... that it is for everyone and does not have to be expensive or require fancy technology. In fact, if you need to rely on technology, you are going to have a hard time creating a sustainable building. Most of the heavy lifting is done by trying to place the building in the right way and take advantage of the site. What makes a big difference is to aim for a connection to nature, sky, water and landscape, as well as an abundance of daylight. Being connected to these elements is important for serenity and healing. With my work, I strive to provide that connection. A house is not an object. It has to be an integral part of the landscape around it. Breaking down barriers to the outdoors is a critical part of a good design approach. I use a lot of moving glass panels to increase the connection to the outdoor spaces and the available views. I also try to build with natural materials as much as possible, as I think they will better stand the test of time. It is important to take advantage of the very mild climate of Southern California. To allow natural breezes and sunlight to cool and heat our homes here is a great option. See more

This Policy Platform serves as a statement on AIA's policy priorities for the final U.S. presidential candidates and administration. The AIA is launching this Policy Platform in an effort to better define our advocacy priorities for the next administration and Congress, and to ensure that AIA's voice is heard. Thi...s is the first time that AIA has provided a Policy Platform to the major presidential candidates, Congress, and other policymakers. AIA was very intentional in formulating a singular platform statement, rather than a partisan one. We hope that this will encourage members of all political parties to reach across the aisle to better address the growing needs in the built environment and beyond. I think we can all agree that the acrimony in Washington continues to stifle productivity and progress.
