This time last year the San Francisco University High School Girls Tennis pulled off a close win against cross town rival Lick-Wilmerding. Captain Malia reflects on the match, I remember everyone looking through the holes of the fence trying to watch the deciding matches. We were all so excited and felt the win coming! When we won, I remember all of the us running out to the middle of the tennis courts celebrating! #RedDevilPride #TheRealU

Now that this fun Spirit Week (Potato Day) pic from UHS librarian Nicole has gotten your attention, she has some Halloween reads to suggest. Halloween looks to be very different this year, so what better way to spend it than with a scary boo-k? Here are a few of the many that you can find in the UHS library either in print or as an e-book. What to read: Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson... Before Stephen King and Neil Gaiman, San Francisco native Shirley Jackson wrote this classic horror story. Four people enter Hill House to investigate spooky happenings, but the house grows in power and eventually takes one of them as its own. Carmen Maria Machado, author of Her Body and Other Parties, calls it, the scariest book I’ve ever read. Available as an e-book. Fledgling by Octavia Butler Revered science fiction writer Octavia Butler often combined elements of horror into her stories. In Fledging vampires are born, not made. As with all of Butler’s books, this vampire story is more than meets the eye. Available in print for check out. Cabinet of Curiosities by Guillermo Del Toro Filmmaker/author Guillermo Del Toro shares his drawings, writings and sources of inspiration for the fantastical and horrific worlds he has created from Hellboy to Pan’s Labyrinth to The Strain. Recommended for aspiring artists, filmmakers, and writers. Available in print for check out.

This time last year the San Francisco University High School Varsity Field Hockey competed in a thrilling overtime win against Marin Catholic. Captain Clarissa reflects on the win, Having split honors once, and winning the next, we entered the game knowing that it would be tough but that we could win. We attacked as well as they defended, resulting in a stalemate at the end of regular time. With suspense building further, after yet another scoreless period in the first half of overtime, our team left it late but finally scored off a penalty corner; this last minute goal made the win feel that much more special, exciting, and rewarding. #RedDevilPride #TheRealU

With the #election quickly approaching, our librarian Hayley, offers some nonpartisan books you might want to read before then. What You Should Know About Politics by Jessamyn Conrad and Martin Garbus (print): Though not specifically election-focused, this book goes through all the issues including the economy, health care, immigration, education and climate change and discusses who stands where on each one and why. Votes of Confidence by Jeff Fleischer (ebook): A guide t...o the nuts and bolts of elections with data from the crazy 2016 election and from the 2018 cycle. There is also a chapter on how you can get involved. #GoVote #YourVoteMatters #CivilRight
