It's been a challenging semester, to say the least, but that doesn't stop us from being immensely proud of our Department Honoree, Michelle Liu! Congratulations, Michelle! https://pi.sfsu.edu//ss-Hood-Recipient-a/jvg5js/703630019

Dear Friends of DS, We hope that you are all staying safe and taking care of yourselves and your loved ones. We've been muddling through here, doing our best to give our students the best education possible, given the current situation. You may be aware of the SF State HOPE Crisis Fund. From the web site (https://dos.sfsu.edu//sf-state-hope-fund-crisis-loan-appli):... "To help students manage unexpected crisis situations, SF State has established the SF State HOPE Crisis Fund (HOPE = Help, Opportunity & Pathway to Empowerment), a fund that assists students with financial support when they need it most. This fund supports students who are undergoing a crisis that leaves them in a situation that is beyond their control. Receiving help from the HOPE Crisis Fund could be the deciding factor that allows a student to stay on track to graduation. Students who receive assistance will realize that they’re not alone, that someone cares. Recipients of this fund are not required to pay back the awarded monies, but are instead, encouraged to make a donation, of any dollar amount, to this fund when they are able, as a means to continue to offer this type of crisis support to future SF State students." All fundraising efforts have shifted to raising money for the HOPE Crisis Fund. The following message went out to our network this week: "Monday kicked off San Francisco State University's Campaign for HOPE a showing of unity in support of students facing unprecedented financial challenges in the wake of COVID-19. Make your gift now in support of the SF State HOPE Crisis Fund: https://connect.clickandpledge.com//5f17b247-e520-40e5-a22 Inspired by our community's generosity, the San Francisco State University Foundation Board of Directors has offered a match challenge of $50,000 the largest crowdfunding match challenge in University history if we hit our goal of 300 gifts to the HOPE Crisis Fund by midnight on Friday, April 17. Can we count on you to help us reach our 300 donor goal? A gift of ANY size brings us closer to unlocking $50,000 for Gators in need." If you are able, we would truly appreciate any help you could give our current students. Above all, please take care of yourselves and yours. We hope to be able to see you again in person in the near future! #SFSUHope

As the semester draws to a close (good luck with finals, everyone!), we'd like to celebrate our own Olivia Tsai, who was selected as the College of Business Undergraduate Hood Recipient! We're so proud of her, and certainly can't think of a more deserving soon-to-be grad! (Also take a look at the other department honorees. Anyone notice a major that keeps popping up?!)

This spring marks Professor Uday's last semester at SF State before his retirement. The DS department hosted an appreciation lunch for him before the break. He will be missed by all the students and colleagues whose lives he touched - leaving us all better off for having had the opportunity to learn from and work with him. We wish you a fantastic retirement, Uday!

Yesterday, a group of SF State DSSA students participated in the 2nd annual BADSS, hosted this year by UC Berkeley! They spent the day learning different packages to help in visualizing and analyzing data, and participated in a case competition. Looking forward to next year's event!
