On June 24th, 2018, the bronze bust of San Francisco’s 42nd mayor, Gavin C. Newsom, was installed in the hallowed space of the Mayor's Rotunda in San Francisco City Hall where it joins three other past mayors who were treated with the same honor. The bust is a creation of sculptor Bruce Wolfe, who lives in nearby Piedmont, Califonia. Wolfe recently sculpted an eight-foot-tall bronze statue of Tony Bennett, which was installed on Nob Hill outside of the Fairmont Hotel, and he ...was one of three finalists for the bust of Harvery Milk, which is also located in City Hall. Newsom’s bust was proposed by ArtCare, a group that restores aging public artworks and is a partner of the Arts Commission. "We are delighted to offer this opportunity to commemorate Gavin Newsom, the youngest mayor of San Francisco, and his important legacy," Meg Spriggs, ArtCare board president, wrote in a Nov. 10 letter to Tom DeCaigny, director of cultural affairs for the Arts Commission. Newsom’s bust design is in keeping with the bases and columns of the other busts on the mayor’s balcony. It will be mounted on a freestanding stone base and display a bronze plaque and recognition statement. The $91,000 project is being funded through private donations that will cover the fabrication, artist fee, base, bronze plaque, and a maintenance endowment.
A very good man will be sorely missed.

"The People's Palace" is a half hour documentary about one of the most extraordinary civic buildings in America, San Francisco’s City Hall. The film focuses not only on architecture, construction and renovation, but on the people that worked, protested, mourned and celebrated there in the past 100 years. It was directed by James Yager and produced by Jim Yager Media and the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library. Please 'click through' to watch on Vimeo.
