I know that this is a rather difficult time that is affecting everyone in the world, but I encourage you during this time to stay strong in your faith and personal relationship with God through prayer, reading of Holy Scripture, your fasting observances and your loving service to your family. Dear Fellow Parishioners, please see Father's message below regarding the suspension of church services due to "the shelter in place" order: Dear Brothers and Sisters, Seven counties in the greater San Francisco area have been ordered to shelter in place until April 7, 2020, with no non-essential services being permitted, so as to slow the spreading of this disease. This restriction currently affects our four parishes in Bay Area. We anticipate that similar orders may be i...ssued in other regions as the spread of the Coronavirus continues, and expect that parishes will abide by the guidelines of the authorities. For this reason, our St. Michael Serbian Orthodox Church will continue serving Divine Liturgies without attendance or rather reducing it to only couple of chanters who will maintain social distance of at least six feet from one another. Please be patient in these times of great challenge, and please pray that this pestilence ends soon. (See the prayer below) This measure will last until further notice. In Christ, Fr. The egg as a symbol of life is mentioned in old stories of many nations and religions. Dying eggs is linked to the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the first m...ention of this custom in the Balkans dates to the 16th century. Even today people keep this tradition, and dyeing eggs red emphasizes their symbolism as the source of life. It is a custom to dye the first egg (called "uvarkua") red and to keep it at home throughout the year, until the next #Easter. This egg is believed to have protective and magical powers and it is considered a great misfortune for the family if the egg breaks. Although, due to the modern lifestyle, people generally use artificial colors, there are still housewives who dye eggs using a variety of plants. Today the Serbian Orthodox Church observes Good Friday (Great Friday or Holy Friday), the day when Jesus Christ was taken from the house of the high priest Caia...phas to the Roman procurator Pontius Pilate, who condemned him to be crucified. Looking at what people and soldiers are doing to him, Christ said: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do". Good Friday is considered to be the saddest day of Christianity. The custom is to dye Easter eggs in red, which symbolizes the blood of Christ, his sacrifice but also the belief in the resurrection and new life. ------------------ Српска православна црква данас обележава Велики петак, дан када е Исус Христос одведен из куе првосвештеника Каафе код римског прокуратора Понтиа Пилата кои га е осудио да буде разапет на крсту.
